Installing program files on /SD/Games or /SD/Apps - Anyone else annoyed with this?
Hi all,
Pardon the idiocy , but I can't seem to figure a way to do this.
Basically, I use my SanDisk Extreme II SD card for my application storage, but when installing, program files don't give me an option to name the folders or to install them into individual folders.
For example, if I install OzVGA, it asks me where to put it. I click SD drive and it installs on its own. It doesn't ask me what specific folder or what name to set the folder.
I find this behavior to be remarkably frustrating, given the fact that some companies install within their own company name folders, making it hard to find their folders!
Also, I would like to sort my Apps/Games/Util/Japanese language/School related stuff in my SD card by folders, but everything is always installed in the root SD card.
Is there a fix/way around this? I realize it's a stupid question and I apologize. :approve:
You could try getting the .cab files and using cabinstaller. It lets you specify the directory to install in.
I quit installing to my Sandisk Ultra II SD card because I think the axim started corrupting it trying to load programs... But the memory hack may fix this.

The .cab files can usually be found under C:\Program FIles\MS Activesync for most pocket pc programs once you've run it, but as you say some programs may be outside of that folder under there own company name but they are all in Program Files somewhere at least on PCs running Windows anyway.

Most installers don't usually come with .cab files though (at least in my experience).
All installers come with .cab files. If there's no .cab file, then you have to manually place the files in their destination. The .cab files are the Windows Mobile installers. When you run the .exe on your PC, it extracts the .cab file(s) and then transfers the one your Axim will use via ActiveSync.
If the .exe installer lets you select a location, that's where the .cab file(s) will be extracted to. If it doesn't, then you have to go searching.
This just seems like such bad coding, imo. Not giving the user the choice of where to install the file? What's up with that?
Here is how I do it.
Get a registry editor, show all files on your installation card. Delete the ignore_my docs file.
Make a "My Documents" folder without quotes
Inside that folder make a folder for each program you are going to instal, in these folder you will direct each program to instal by choosing their name as you instal.
Here is how you do that.
1. Use a registry editor on the Pocket PC, then locate the following key:
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\Microsoft Application Installer\
2. Change the value of 'fAskDest' to '1' (without quotes). Exit editor.
3. When you instal with A/S (or cab file) and it ask to instal to default say no then choose CF card (Drop down menu) then I think the second line you can direct to the folders you already made.
Now everything is neat and tidy and organize.

I really can't get this to work. It just basically shows me the same "CF/SD/Main/Built in Storage" screen. It doesn't show any of the folders I made. It asks to enter the name, but it doesn't show any folders that I made (only shows what looks like main memory folders, even though I pointed it to my SD card!)
Basically, I made "My Documents" on my SD Card and put all of the folders inside of it.
