Can't synchronise

My nice shiny X51V is out of the box.

I have downloaded activesynch 4.1, I have tried different USB sockets, but when activesynch starts up it goes into a retrieving settings banner and doesn't come out of it. 'Synchronise' is not offered as an option. I've done a search on here and followed the tutorial but my problem doesn't seem to have cropped up before.

Anyone got a tip for me?
