How does Dell handle broken displays?

Hi Folks,

a friend just came by and I wanted to show off a little with my brandnew X51v. Of course, my friend dropped the Axim
Even though I spent quite an amount of money for a Brando Workshop Aluminium Case, the touchscreen is apparently broken. Well, to be fair, thanx to the Case the Axim hasn't got a single scratch (as if I cared ....)

To be precise: The TFT-Display itself is fine, not even a single pixel-error. But the Touchscreen-glas is broken an won't function anymore (at least in 1/4 of the screen).

Now, does anyone know how much Dell will charge for the repair?

Luckily, a replacement-unit is already on its way, Dell support agreed to send me a brand new one when I talked to a tech guy two weeks ago about the usual A00 problems... Of course the replacement will be a A00 as well because there are no german ROM-updates...

So, if anyone encountered a simmilar situation and had to get their Axim fixed, please share your experience!

Thanx in advance, DiePlage

Seems that you're already returning the broken unit to Dell once the replacement arrives so not worth the fuss. Just hard reset and send the old one back.

I think what he's worried about is the fact that the busted screen isn't part of the original work order. AFAIK, they do keep track of that stuff, and I doubt he wants a nastygram from Dell about falsifying the damage ...

I read DiePlage's post maybe differently, but you have a good point. Though, probably a smaller consideration than it may seem. According to my company's Dell rep, there is a four-fold higher rate of shipping damage on returns than on new shipments. Apparantly, Dell does not use the same approach for returns as they do shipping new with the "as few as possible hands touching it setup". Obviously to cut costs. However, this is US experience. Anyway, what I originally got out of DiePlage's post is that the screen is not physically broken, but has lost responsiveness in about a quarter of the touchscreen. To me, that seems like it just lost calibration.

Worried

Thanks a lot so far.

The glas is physically broken, you can see ist. Still, the TFT itself isn't affected.

ZekeSulastin is right, "just sending the device back" surely won't work. When I returned a broken cell-phone, the guy checked the device for obvious defects before signing the paperwork.
My friend has got a personal liabilty insurance (everyone has to in germany) so I suppose his insurance could pay for the repair.
Still I am wondering whether they will make me pay for the complete display unit, that could indeed be quite expensive. In that case I would most likely keep the broken device and try to sell it on ebay (you know, there ARE those people that pay for broken stuff)...

Don't say anything to Dell, return it and insure it for the value of the unit.
