New x51v locks up frequently

I got my x51v about a week and a half ago, and to be completely honest, I am severely dissapointed. I had an x5 that was an absolute trooper! Rarely locked up, bullet-proof construction, great battery life. It's only downfall was size: it was a behemoth. Oh yeah, and somebody stole it. So I decide, as a christmas present to myself, to get the newest greatest latest PDA, and since my x5 treated me so well (regardless of how I treated it :)), I'd go with another Dell.

This go around has been less than impressive. Out of the box, it was sluggish - tap on the start button, and it takes a little less than a second for the menu to drop down, my x5 wa near instantaneous. It also seems to take longer to start an application than on my X5 (and it was the 300mhz model)
Is there any way so make it respond a little snappier?

Then it locks up quite a bit. I installed my favorite programs I had on my X5 (repurchased, to have the most up to date versions) BatteryPack, JournalBar, MSMoney, Vito Button Mapper. I also have the dell BT keyboard driver loaded and a 1Gig toshiba SD card. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why or when it locks up, but it stops responding, and I have to soft reset. This happens several times a day, and it will lock up on a certain application sometimes, and then other times not.

Do I have a dud, or am I doing something wrong?

Hang in there!

Most all here, running 2003SE, are happy with their X50v axim!

Right now there are problems due to WM5, but that will be remedied in the near future.

This is normal. Many others have had the same problem. Also many progs written for wm2003se and lower may freeze up on wm2005. I heard turning off error reporting helps, but not sure becuase i don't own a wm2005 device. This is why i'm not upgrading my x50.

All of the issues you have had have been experienced by others here. If you do a search on the issue you will find solutions and others experiences. For me the answers to the issues you have and others you have not had as yet have been the following. First do a update to ROM A04 for the X51V. Second turn on BT and leave it on even when turning off your unit. After these two tasks were complete I have had a X51V that works perfect. BTW the X51V will default to a CPU speet of auto (the slowest) after a hare or soft reset or battery change. The first thing I do after each battery change is to turn the CPU speed to 624 mhg. Hope this gets you on the correct path with your unit. I think its the best PDA I have had in the last 6 years.

Ok, so as to hear the other side of the story, I just got a x51v myself (upgrade from a x5 that I bought 3 years ago), and I must say I've experienced none of the problems you mention. I upgraded to the A04 rom, and once I got that in, no serious problems. Everything is pretty snappy and I've only had lockups when I'm doing some major tweaking/running experimental/beta programs. I am not using bluetooth at all, though, and have that disabled.

Problems I've had: The CF/SD card disappearing problem (mainly cf, though quite rare since I did the registry tweak---soft reset fixes if I pull the card out first). The white screen on dock while off (that seems to have completely stopped). And the occasional battery latch thing.

So far though, pretty happy.

I posted 10 steps for a stress free upgrade from WM2003SE
10 Steps to have a "stress-free" WM5 upgrade. In your case start from step-5.

The below 10-steps are what I'd do if I have a x50/WM2003SE going to WM5. Pretty much all the tips are in the post "WM5 is here to stay.." Link at bottom:

1-Hard-reset
2-Connect to ActiveSync 3.8 as guest
3-Install AS 4.1-I assume there is no problem w/connectivity
4-Perform the WM5 ROM upgrade - direct USB connect/powered
5-When WM5 is up, disable WM5 error notification
6-Install a Registry editor (e.g. Resco Explorer Suite)
7-Apply the registry hack for I/O cache performance and hack for CF disapearing
8-Make sure NO battery meters are active as today plug-in
9-Apply ActiveSync "fake server" hack
10-Install ActiveSync toggle (posted later in this thread)

At this point, take off the cradle, check your CPU in auto-mode to see if the CPU is toggled thru different speeds. If not, just set at max. And perform a backup.

Do not forget to turn on your Axim before putting cradle to avoid "blank screen of death".

You should be good to go!

Thanks! I'll give that a shot tonight... (yet another evening spent on this thing, sounds like this should be more fruitful)

Good luck Adamdemuth!

If you think Dell and MS gave you a "lemon", this should be the best limonade recipe you can get!

Just want to give a little humor for what to come!
