Wow, this thread made me go and read more about performance issues with TKIP and AES...while I did find documents on the (modest) performance hit that TKIP causes, I didn't really find anything on the hit associated with AES vs. an unsecured network or vs. TKIP. I wonder. I guess it should be better because it encrypts larger chunks of data, if I understand correctly. But I don't know how much better. And then I also have no idea what happens when a network is using two different security mechanisms for two different computers (as mine is, when my iBook talks to it via AES and my Axim via TKIP). I guess my network speed needs are not so severe as to care, but it's still interesting....

This is what you need for WPA-AES to work with your PocketPC:

1.- A wireless access point that supports WPA with AES and WPA-PSK with AES.

2.- (Optional) A RADIUS server for authentication if WPA/AES is chosen (otherwise use WPA-PSK/AES)

3.- Natively, Windows Mobile does NOT suport any security schemes other than WEP, WPA-PSK/TKIP and WPA/TKIP. You need a third party supplicant for AES to work, which you can get at www.funk.com for $50.

Having said this, if any one of these concepts are rather fuzzy to you, you don't need AES encryption.

Hope this helps!

Dell has included Funk's Odessey Network software right into the X51v series (it's preinstalled on the OS), it's just that I dont know how to use it...

The version that Dell included in the OS is nearly useless. It is a crippled version of Odyssey which does not support AES.

As paranoid as I am, I am content with the fact that my PDA will only connect using WPA/TKIP, as I am pretty locked down with my RADIUS authentication scheme.

It sounds that the very best option for you is to use WPA-PSK/TKIP with a draconially long, convoluted and strong password. Take your favorite line from a book or movie and bastardize it with numbers and special symbols, that oughtta be pretty secure for you.

Peace and phun.

you can use this site to generate the max 63 characters WPA-PSK key, http://www.kurtm.net/wpa-pskgen/

tkip problem in dell wlan util solved

I have been trying to switch from using the Odyssey client to the dell wlan util in a wm5 upgraded x50v for use with my wpa-psk tkip network. In the past I could never get it to work under the dell client but have had no problems under the Odyssey client. This morning I decided to finally track down the problem and I believe I have found out why alot of users can not get the dell wlan util to connect to wpa-psk/tkip networks. The problem is aes+tkip hybrid mode that access points use.

Since I have wpa aes devices I have used the hybrid/mixed mode aes+tkip which allowed the x50v and my aes using laptops to co-exist. It turns out that the dell wlan util has a flaw that when it tries to work on a aes+tkip network it never completes the final key handshake. Once I switched to tkip only mode the dell wlan util started to work right away. I am running a linksys wrt54gs with openwrt firmware. I hope this helps some users who have been forced to use the odyssey client like I have.
