wich MEM card CF or SD ?

I'm just about to get my first memory upgrade for my X51V , and i was wondering what most of you guys get SD or CF. Does it matter at all ? is there any advantage to one on the other ?
the only thing i can think of is maybe to leave free CF slot (by getting SD card) for future cards like maybe WiMAX or any other hardware card.

thanks Danny

SD cards are the newer card, while cf are older. Future axims won't have cf card slots, is what i hear. CF are cheaper, but sd are more common and an invstment for the future. Afterall, a single sd card can be used in pdas, digitial camera's, pcs, laptops, and mp3 players. They are a good investment. Today, i only see cf card drives on pdas, and in older electronics.

SD vs CF

i have done way too much research on this... what i learned is:
Axim is optimized for the SD card, so it will be faster, plus the CF uses more voltage, so it will shorten the battery.
as for the regular SD cards vs Hi-Speed cards, the Axim will show no difference. I even tested this myself, with a hi-speed vs a regular SanDisk. While the benchmarks were better with the hi-speed (pocket mech for benchmarking), real world there was no difference at all.
the only difference i saw with SD cards, was when i briefly upgraded to WM5... the card read faster then with WM03.
unfortunatly, i had to roll back to WM03 until the next ROM.

hope i could help,
David

You always have the benefit of doing both. I just purchased a 2GB SD card, and plan on getting something around a 4GB CF card in the future. I don't even have my x51v yet, but I'm purchasing one on the next big Dell sale. The benefit of CF is that it's usually cheaper for more space vs. the SD cards.

Is there a noticable difference in speed, or is the SD simply faster in testing?

For me, the differences are:
  • I had SD cards from my Palm PDAs
  • My 5MP P&S uses SD cards
  • My DSLRs use CF cards, which I have, too
  • CF cards cost less per MB than SD (usually)
  • CF cards come in larger sizes than SD (usually)
  • While there are SDIO devices, seems that there are more CF interface devices (I do not have nor use either)

I have a 1GB SD and a 2GB CF in my X50V at this time.

being new to axim, i may be wrong, but, and this is just from my expierence with cf cards and sd cards, i use a sd card in the axim, leaving the cf open. i will not be swithching the sd cards as often and need to leave the cf card open. the sd cards from the ones i have used and destroyed, are more fragile than cf cards - i have only killed one out of 15 cf cards in 4 years, and 2 sd cards in a year. i have a tendancy to be a bit rough on equipment. i would assume - that the sd would be the the best choice for memory upgrade, as long as you are not swapping out cards often.

keep in mind that i am a axim newbie, but the cards i have used for cameras and pdas in the past. there is also no need to get the ultra super fast cards, that is mainly for the high speed buffering in cameras, and being that the axim is limited at usb 1.1 speeds (if i have learned correctly from the board) you will not notice a difference.

and, as a side note, washing machines are fine for cf cards, but ocean water is a bit rough on them.

i have a SD in the SD slot & a SD2CF adapter in the CF slot for more SD power :p

it's just that everything at home here uses sd/mmc so i have no real use for CF cards.

If you're wanting more disk space in a single card, and I mean more than 2GB, then CF would be your choice. AFAIK, SD only recently broke the 2GB barrier, whereas if you're willing to fork the cash, you can get a 8GB CF cad, or a 6GB microdrive or the likes. CF does use more voltage though, and will drain the batterly quicker. I myself currently use a 1GB Sandisk, but plan on purchasing a large capacity CF card as well in the future.

I have a 1.28 GB SD card and a 2 GB CF card. The SD card is used to store my maps and GPS software, while the CF card is used to store my programs, and other files for my job.
