x51 Update (Resolving Bluetooth Issues)

I just got off the phone with Dell tech support, and after being transferred 6 different times I finally got some information.

I posted here yesterday about a bluetooth connection issue between my x51v and motorola v600 phone, and not being able to send texts with the axim but being able to connect to GPRS and access the internet perfectly fine. The gentleman I talked to at Dell told me that theres nothing he can do to make it work and it sounds like a software issue. He suggested calling motorola but admitted that it wont help. He also said that the problem was bizarre because my Axim has no problem connecting to the internet but cant use my v600 for bluetooth dialing or SMS (under bluetooth settings - com ports, the only available option is New Incoming Port... I cant make an outgoing connection because New Outgoing Port isnt even listed and he said it should be).

I asked about another ROM update to fix these problems and he said that A05 isnt coming any time soon. HOWEVER he did mention a software update for windows mobile 5.0 and said that this may help connectivity. This update is scheduled for release during the "end of january to mid february".

Before telling me to call motorola, he said that for these kinds of issues Dell refers customers to AximSite.com to search for answers. I told him I checked there already and nobody can resolve this issue, and he said that Dell has a few people who watch over the forums here. If those people notice a large quantity of Axim owners having the same problem, they will create a fix for it and release it rather quickly.

So long story short, if you are upset that Dell skimped on the MS bluetooth stack then voice your opionions here. Apparently this will speed up the updates and we all might finally be satisfied with our x51's bluetooth capabilities.

*chimes in* Im sorely missing PIM functions, OBEX file transfers, audio gateway, headset profiles..

Actually. Perhaps it is a better idea to make a sticky poll for this?

Same here. Dell, PLEASE get this BlueTooth thing right. It was excellent in WM2003SE, it is just appalling in WM5. The current WM5 BT-implementation is NOT even slightly adequate for the target audience.

HP apparently got it right, so Dell should be able to as well. The way it is now would be a reason for me (and many of my collegues) not to get a Dell next time around.

Bluetooth Issue is horrible

I excitedly updated to a Dell X51v for Christmas, only to find out neither my headset, nor my phone connect with the new Axim.

What a disappointment,

Please fix the bluetooth issues.

Yes, I think the x51v should have a standard complement of Bluetooth profiles, including the ability to interface with common headsets, and transfer files via OBEX, and that WM5 on the x51v should not be considered complete until it has this feature. These things were reasonable to expect in the Axim, because they have been part of almost all Bluetooth cellphones for several years.

I love my Axim, and this is actually pretty much the *only* thing I need to see changed about it.

I'd appreciate it if Dell fixed this.

The problem lies both in money and development time. Dell gambled that the Microsoft Built-in bluetooth stack was going to be good enough. (Stupid gamble, given MS'es track record, but there you go). If it would have been good enough, Dell would've saved quite a bit of $ on not having to buy the widcomm bluetooth stack which Im sure is part of the reason why the x51v is the cheapest VGA pda out there (well at least best value for money features vs price).

Now that their gamble turned sour, question #2 is if they are now willing to spend $ to buy the widcomm stack afterall AND then spend extra $ to have their own people hook that stack into the axim ROM. (I doubt they can break even, financially, if they would buy a widcomm stack, even though Im sure some of us, me included, would be willing to pay a few $ for it).

To the Dell Service techs lurking: Please consider Microsoft Windows XP SP2, released august 2004, I believe, which was the first SP of Windows XP to included the Microsoft bluetooth stack, which sucks and blows at the same time. (fun detail: Most USB dongles work just fine with generic Widcomm USB drivers).

Fast forward to, oh, say, christmas 2005. Has Microsoft released a BETTER, or dare I say it: acceptable bluetooth stack for their flagship product? Uhm.

Dell, PLEASE stop waiting for MS to fix their bluetooth stack, we will be old and gray before they come anywhere near widcomm quality.

I agree - I miss being able to pull pics from my BT phone while away from my PC. 2 Steps forward, 1 MAJOR step back! :bang:

I agree with everything posted here. I own axim x51v for two weeks now, and I have painfully found out that bluetooth PAN service is missing from MS bluetooth stack.

Please Dell: solve these bluetooth issues.

Thanks

Bah.

having seen the subject "x51v Update (Resolving Bluetooth issues)", I anxiously clicked on this thread expecting, hoping, to hear news about an update to the software or ROM image that actually resolved bluetooth issues.

ha.

Could we rename the subject of this thread to something like

"Update on Attempts to resolve x51v Bluetooth Issues"

...so we're not just getting hopes up only to dash them right away?

I just want to listen to my shows and music without a wire catching on everything (I'm a Klutz). I hope a Dell lurker shows this thread to someone that will be able to convince others of our need.

Im sure they know about the 'need', the question is when (under what conditions) will they be inclined to do something about it. And if they are, when will the users actually get to see this fix...

Might as well add my two useless cents into the pot.

I just want bluetooth to work with my Motorola 710! I've been carrying around 2 PPCs on trips because my iPaq 2215 is used for net access with my phone.

I'd happily downgrade the x51 from WM5 to 2003. Come on Dell, I'll even pay for it!

I too am having problems connecting to my Motorola V710 Bluetooth phone with my Dell Axim X51V. My problem isn't quite the same as yours I don't think - I can't seem to partner with the phone. I enter my passcode (0000) and the Axim states that it is incorrect, I try again, and it takes me to a screen that should list the available services - the list is blank. I have also have an Axim X30 and it works great!

Thanks!
Peter
