Hello Everyone
Sometimes my internal speaker won't work. I'll hear sounds if I plug in an external microphone or speakers to my x50v running windows 2003, but when I unplug them, I have a feeling my x50v still thinks the speakers are plugged in and disables the internal speakers. My x50v is fairly new so I'm sure the speaker is just fine. Also, when my speaker works (maybe about 1/3 of the time), the speaker works fine so I don't think the speaker is broken.
Does anyone know what might be wrong? Does this need to be warrantied?
Yes Please Help! I just ran into this problem today as well. I can't get any sound out of my external speaker at all now. I still get sound my I plug in the headphone. I'm not sure if the speaker is broken. I think it happen once before; it come back to normal after a soft-reset, but i've reset it several times now and it has not come back :(
I bought my Axim50v about a year ago, so my warranty is about up, go figure.
The phone jack on it is....well....let say...below standard to keep it mildly.
If you want to go the Warranty route, you can, but then it's like cherry picking.
You can fix it yourself, like I did, which is pretty easy.
I was in a hurry to get it fix so no pics, sorry.
Tool Need:
T5 screwdriver
Small flathead screwdriver
Small phillip screwdriver
Glue
Problem 1:
The contact point in the jack does not spring back when the plug is remove causing no contact which does not route the sound back to the speaker.
Problem 2:
No sound (mono, crappy when touch) comes out of the speaker/headset. The pins on the jack are pin through holes, but they are too short to go through the holes, so they just resting against the holes with no solder on them.
Solution 1:
A. Disassemble:
1. Remove battery cover and battery.
2. Remove T5 screws under the rubble feet at the corners.
3. Pry open cover with flathead screwdriver, it's a little tight
4. Carefully remove the MIC wire connector.
B. Repair:
1. Insert a plug into the jack.
2. Bend the metal contact tab on the jack (at the end of the plug, on top) down until it's close to but not touching the bottom contact
3. Remove the plug and test, you're good to go.
Solution 2:
A. Dissassemble:
5. Unscrew the 4 small philip screws around the metal plate and remove the plate.
6. Unplug the ribbon cable from the back of the pcb using the flathead screwdriver (should pop right up)
7. Remove the back cover
B. Repair:
1. Push/Clamp the jack hard against the PCB and solder the pins/holes.
2. Test, and if it works good then glue the jack to the PCB.
Reassemble:
Pretty much self explainatory. Don't forget the ribbon and Mic cable.
I will try to take mine apart again for pictures.
Good Luck

Thanks for the response! I think it's the problem 1 that StopTheBus described. Since mine is still under warranty for about a week, I'm gonna have it replaced (my screen is a bit scratch up anyways and a replacement would be welcome, teh heh).
Excellent help/instructions StopTheBus, thanks. I'll definately refer to it if the problem happens again and I'm past my warranty. I would have been afraid of fixing the Axim myself, but now that I how it is done, I'm confident that I could do it if need to.
It's nice of StopTheBus to explain the problem and lay down effective solutions.
You can also try to push in and pull out the headset pin into the axim jack a couple of times quickly, and it may just correct the problem temporarily.
Shame, it's just such a bad piece of hardware for the jack.
The Dell Axim X51v they have a substandard vendor 1/8" mini head phone jack. I bought a new X51v and with in two weeks the internal speaker quit working, Dell was great they send me another X51v (referbished) to replace it, in a month the internal speaker quit working on it also. I use head phones alot. I call Dell and they said that they were bad jacks on the x51v he said by taking a needle you can flip the bimetal clip back over the post. I could not see down there as to what I was doing, but on me third try the internal speaker was working again. But up on installing the head phones again the internal speaker quit again (note the head phones have all ways worked). When you install the head phones the 1/8" mini jack it has a switch that disconnects the internal speaker and that is what is a bad design. My problem is I want a new revised 1/8" mini jack installed, not another X51v with the old jack that will do it again, Help what do I do Steve

Take a trip to RadioShack, buy a sturdy jack, a soldering iron, and some resin...
Don't do this unless you know what you're doing.. :exc: :exc:
I'm not good with a soldering iron and so it sounds like I need an alternative to using the headphone jack - are their bluetooth headphone options for the x50v?
I have the same problem.. and as I read in many axim forums.. this is a normal problem in our Axims.
I'm decided to open my axim and replace the headset jack
I found this website with all the posibles headset jacks.. Phone Jack (3.5mm)
anyone remember where I can find the Tutorial to see how disarm my axim step by step... and there I will like to see wich one is the "headset jack" to buy it
thanks
