Average lifetime of an Axim

For those of you who have owned many axims, what is the average lifetime of one. Do they become obscilite before they die? What is the first thing to fail on an axim? How many years does an average axim last, or pocket pc in general?

I've had my X5 advanced for about a year, it's still working well and not "obscilite", though a x51v looks SOOOO cool right now.

I had an X5 low for about 3 years before the advanced, but, uh... Broke the screen in an acceident. I might have had a 4 year old x5 low if I hadn't broken it, still not terribly, "obscilite".

I'd like to get a good 4 to 5 years out of my axim without any damages over $100. If i treat it well, its possible!

Ive bought the x51v this xmas because I feel it has the most 'future potential' of any PDA. The only thing that worries me is the free memory, but there are companies that offer you to increase your RAM to 128 for I think $128. (or thereabouts).

Other than that I really don't see anything you could want in a PDA except host USB. It even has a graphics accelerator. Sure, in the coming 3 years there will be bigger better faster PDA's out there but for the purposes I use it for (video playback, music playback, PIM) it has all the CPU and screen quality I need.

For this reason Ive bought the completecare thing from dell, Im 'gambling' $170 on my guess that I will have a use for this PDA during the coming 3 years.

wow, I bought my X51v with one year complete care for a total of $260 (including tax + shipping) and you paid $170 for 3 years Complete care?
I used to have an HP Jornada which lasts forever, and I just gave it to someone so I have a reason to buy the Axim. Hopefully it'll last a year or two.

My x50v just turned one on XMas and I use it every day! Not sure this will help but until today I haven't even owned an aftermarket case (just bought the RhinoSkin Titanium) and it has survived a lot of day-to-day abuse (drops, backpacks, etc.). It is running strong and has more software than ever! I love my PPC!

I still have a working Casio EM-500 Pocket PC. It must be 6 years old by now.

Treat them right and you'll get plenty of life out of them.

I would like to have mine as long as possible. I'm taking extremely good care of it. Invisibleshield screen protector and Rhinoskin will hopefully help.

I have had my X30 for about 3 years now. I use it everyday and it is still working like the day I got it. Next thing to be replaced is probably the battery.

Don't drop it,keep it dry and it should last as long as you want.It will never be obsolete as long as it does what you want it to do.

I get a new PDA faster and faster now so I doubt mine will die before the one year ends and before I sell or trade it for something else. As I use my X51v more, I love it more and then I find some reasons to hate it. Though most are software issues, one of the biggest issue is a hardware one - the battery. The battery life on this thing suck so much, I cry myself to sleep at night. I can barely live on 2 full charges per day.

My guess of the lifetime of different Axim components.
(in order from short to long)
1. stylus(missing)
2. battery(dead)
3. earphone socket(bad)
4. screen(broken)
5. BIS(dead)

I've paid $679 (E570) for the entire package (Axim x51v + 3 year completecare). Yes this also was including all 'coupons' I could find in the Netherlands. I knew in advance that Dell are totally taking advantage of european customers, but well I did some calculations, and asking a buddy in the USA to buy it for me, then send it on, would in the end (including postage) cost about the same, and be non-tax-deductable, non-insurable etc.

All I know is that with the completecare thing I am basically insured against 'everything' and that is quite costly. I just know I want to be able to sit in public places and pull out my axim without worrying that some -insert expletive- would steal it from me or I would knock coffee over it. E60/year is not that bad an investment.

Titanium Rhinoskin

Does anyone own the Titanium Rhinoskin case? I am buying an X51v and am trying to decide on a case. Titanium just seems too bad-ass to pass up, plus I've got butterfingers and do not want to know what happens if my new baby takes a direct hit.

Thanks,
Duke
