Question Hebrew support

I'm interested in knowing if there's a way to read/write in Hebrew on PPCs, particulary on WM5. I imagine the ability to see Hebrew characters simply requires a unicode font, but I can't seem to overwrite Tahoma with a unicode version because it's already in use. Also, there would need to be a way to type from right-to-left in Pocket Word and other apps, which I imagine is harder said than done. It is possible to set this up? I imagine it's a similar process for languages like Arabic, so feel free to pipe in if you know how to do RTL text input in any language.
Thanks :approve:

Take a look at www.pocketpc.co.il. They provide full Hebrew support for WM5 devices. However the price tag is high, approx 100 $.

It's very easy to set up in WinXP or on a mac. And you don't need a new keyboard- The QWERTY hebrew layout and some creative transliteration skills go a long way. :)

Wow, $100 is definitely far too much to spend just to be able to use Pocket Word in Hebrew occaisionally, but thanks for the suggestion. I also don't need the entire interface to be translated, so I'm wondering whether it's possible just to have proper bidirectional input at all on a PPC without all that overhead.

My inspiration comes from couple of threads down the page in which some people have gone to great lengths to get Japanese support in WM5. Hebrew can't be that much harder... can it?

Chabibi!

I tried adding every hebrew font from my PC to my then PPC an Axim x30 Hi and it didnt really help.

On the other hand I once installed a trial from Ectaco that adds Hebrew support but doesnt change the whole interface over to Hebrew which was actually pretty good.

Here is a link for the software which is a cool $29.95 - much better than spending $100 simply to view & type Hebrew characters.

G'luck,

Darren

If anyone is interested here is a code for $10 on the Lingvosoft site. That brings the Hebrew support down to $19.95. I don't know how many times it can be used so first come first served :)

I'm afraid it is indeed much harder. Hebrew is considered a "complex" script, whereas Japanese is not. Complex being that the script sometimes changes form or it is bi-directional. Arabic, for example, is also complex script because the alphabet changes form when in a different position in a word. Japanese may have thousands and thousands of characters, but programmatically, the script does not need special handling.

Uniscribe is the engine that does character shaping and the special handling for complex scripts. It is available on desktop Windows system, and also Windows CE. But because there is no Hebrew, or Arabic WM SKU, Uniscribe is not included into WM systems.

What this means is that enabling support for these scripts are much harder since the OS will not be able to handle them correctly, applications need to do these themselves.
