X51v Installing Process: Any Tips

I posted this earlier at the introduction thread but felt I should have posted it here. My apologies in advance for double posting.

EDIT: I have already deleted the double post for clarity

Hey there Folks,

Just Got My X51v from Dell :)

1. I downloaded and installed ActiveSync 4.1
2. Used the Dell CD to install Outlook 2002 on my local Machine(I uninstalled it later, nasty is an understatement. Are there any alternatives to it? I might just get Outlook 2003 if Im forced to)
3. Installed "ActiveSync Toggle" and Disabled ActiveSync.(yes I know this serves no purpose now. *grins* Just wanted to test it, Brilliant little tool)
4. Put in the battery and Hooked up the X51v to the Power Adapter for recharge.

Now I have to wait 8 hours the paper instruction sheet says, for charging.

The build quality of all the Dell Parts that came along seem solid. Only thing that bugs me a little is the interface jack that connects to the AC cable and the X51v,it seems a little flimsy(I shook it a little and I can hear a little rattling).
Im guessing its the connector pins within. The same can be said with the USB travel cable as well.(So Im guessing Im just over-reacting to something normal)

After the charge I intend to:(Will listen to feedback first)
1. Hard Reset the X51v
2. Install the A04 Rom update
3. Install all the Software from the Dell CD(EDIT: I skipped this part: I only installed the purchased software that was knowingly stable for WM5)
4. Install all purchased goodies
(PI5, WebIs Mail, PocketBreeze and SplashID)

Anything wrong so far?
Please let me know guys and gals.

Thanks a million,
Laro.

Nope sounds fine to me! In fact, that is exactly what I did when I got mine...Man those 8 hours are tough! You'll love the screen, especially compared to the 72s! :D So, is this your first WM device?

Hey there Pmcizhere, :)

Thanks for feedback. Yeah the hours go by so slowly but yeah I cant wait to oogle at the beautiful VGA screen.

Yeah its my first WM device. I figured if I was to jump into the world of WM and PPC I might as well do it with a bang. :)

Cant Wait..*tick tick tick...*

Best Regards,
Laro.

P.S Bring on the feedback :approve:

8 hours? I charge my X51v as soon as I got it. But it turns to be full charged just in one hour. Then I can use it as it is full charged.
Question is :
1. Did I did wrong? Must it be charged 8 hours dispite the indicator turns green?
2. Did I got a used device, that people has charged it before?

Just finished charging for 8 hours. As well as updating the ROM to A04,plus installing all the relevant softwares I purchased.

I noticed the indicator does turn green after an hour or so of charging, but to play it safe I charged it for the full 8 hours recommended in the instruction sheet. I just followed the instructions Michael, nothing to worry yourself over.

Ive turned BT on and Im going to try that ActiveSync workaround. Hopefully I shouldnt encounter any problems from this point. :)

So far so good.

Best Regards,
Laro.

Finally!Done!

Ive updated the ROM to A04. Installed all the essentials and made the necessary tweaks to keep the unit stable.(ActiveSync to Manual and BT on) :)

Oh and Ive slapped on the Dell Screen Protector. Its rather murky at the moment Hopefully when my boxwave screen protector arrives it should make all the difference. :approve:

Apart from that all I need to do is install little essential apps and I should be officially up and running on my first pocket pc. The Screen is a Gem :) So Nice and Crisp.

Couldnt have done it so far without all the tips from the various threads. Cheers again to all.

I'd be wary of the trialware such as Battery Pack Lite and the others from the Dell CD. Many posts concerning the programs causing instability - they did with me. Good luck.

Thanks for the warning Lucky. :)

Yeah I decided against installing the programs that were causing battery drain issues and instability problems. Ive got a few select programs running so I should be fine for now.

Heres to good luck! :approve:

EDIT: Oh and Id just like to mention I had 98% battery left after turning off the x51v for more than 7 hours(100% before turning off) So far so good. No White Screens of Death or boot up issues. A 2% drop for 7 plus hours isnt too bad :)

I'm writing this from my X51v connected via my local wi-fi.

This alone makes my day. The Axim X51v is a beast *drool*.

Feels strange using a virtual keyboard though. *smile*. Nonetheless this is very satisfying.

Now I've got to test the video capabilities. I've tested WMA files via TCPMP, they sounded so good.

Gotta Run *laughs*

How is ActiveSync working for you? Are you able to sync through cradle?

Yeah I'm synching quite regularly through the cradle with no problems. So far so good with the unit. No issues whatsoever.
*knocks on wood*

Update on TCPMP Use

Damn video looks sweet on the X51v! :approve:

I installed ActiveSync 4.1 and not able to connect my PDA through the cradle? I am connecting my cradle USB to an USB extension cord from the back of my desktop. Do I need to connect directly (I don't think this should matter)

I do a hard reset before I perform any ROM update. Sorry for the late response, hopefully everything went well with your update. :)
