Upgrading X51v from a non-english version of WM5 to a english ROM version

Hello!

My X51v came with WM5 in its spanish version since I bought it in Dell Spain (Europe).

Does anyone know whether it is possible to upgrade the axim's OS from its spanish A00 ROM version to the last ENGLISH ROM available at Dell's site (called R112544.EXE)??

Anyone has done it successfully?

Thanks in advance
/ecejmpe

I have a X51v with German WM5 OS, which I have had it for about a week ago.
If I know that Dell has already a German version of WM5, I would ask a English version of OS when I order. But, it comes as it is, since I am phisically in Germany, and ordered it in Germany, paid Euro, despite the fact that my German is very poor.

There are following pain when I have a German version of OS for my X51v, so as for those who have French, and Italian version.

1. I can not upgrade the ROM to A04, as many of happy X51v owner have done. There is no updated ROM for German. This means that we, owner of X51v with other language OS, can never enjoy the upgrade of ROM when it fixes many of bugs it has for elder version.

2. The German OS, since it has letters like ö and ä, it conflicts with most of the Chinese/Japanese input software. As soon as that kind of language software installed, these character turned to be displayed in Chinese!

3. I can not change the OS language. there are several methods which I found in this forum. But none of them sounds can fix it.

I got some hint from the great thread WM2003SE: "10+ version trick", switch ROM language without rollback, I am suggested that to downgrade the ROM back to German WM2003, and then change the language. But the downgrade ROM in German works only with X50 and X50v.

I have also studied img file for WM5, and the head of img file is totally diffirent from that of WM2003SE.

There is two possible ways I believe might be worth to try:
1. to download img file into Storage card and through hard reboot to force the device to upgrade. I did not see however, there is any sucessful example for X51v.

2. I read some Chinese threads yesterday. The brave Chinese has tried a lot to install WM5 onto their Made in China PDA. They employed third part software of upgrade utilities to replace their Chinese OS with WM5. However, what kind of risk there is for X51v, is still a question.

I would like to have export to help us (X51v owner with other language OS)in this matter:
How to change the WM5 language?

Menthol, why you add noise here? Did you read the post by michael-gui? He said none of these works, one is for X50 and another is for WM2003, michael tried both and none is applicable.

I did tried all the methods that appeared here. Today I finally get a solution. Dell is willing to take back the German one and repay me money. At the meanwhile, I ordered a new one with the English OS. I actually like X51v very much.

My argument is strong enough though. The German characters/letters conflicts with Japanese/Chinese input software.

If you guys have X51v with OS language other than English, why dont you try to call the local Dell people and simple get a new device?

Hi there, ecejmpe,

I have had a Spanish x50v and changed it to an English one using the following italian tutorial:
http://www.x50v.it/content/view/625/30/
The problem I see is that whereas in the x50v I had both an old Spanish and the very same old English upgrade to do the trick, in the x51v there's no such coincidence. The moment they release the Spanish patch, do the trick and you will not have to wait in the next patch. The sooner you do it, the better.
Ánimo y si cambias a inglés, ya me dirás por donde anda la eñe :-)

To me, the biggest problem is not the "ñ", I can live without it, the problem is more the autocompletion dictionary, it will be useless now (always in english).

En otras palabras, una mier...

Actually the autocompletion learn of the more used words, can learn... so with after a while of using it, can learn a lot of words.
