Problems checking POP3 Email over Wi-Fi, SLOW: Here's the fix

Many users have reported problems checking email over wi-fi on their pda's, from pop3 servers. It is variable: from some servers it works fine, no problem whatsoever.

However, from other servers -- e.g., Comcast -- it is SO slow as to be virtually unusable. Often it won't successfully check at all.

Here's the fix:

There is a problem with sending email from PocketPCs with the PocketPC 2003 and Windows Mobile 2005 operating systems.
The problem has to do with how ISP is set up. The PPC has a problem with certain mail servers. Some servers are configured in a way that it does not have SSL enabled, but the operating system thinks it does have it enabled. So you need to do a registry tweak that forces the registry to tell the operating system not to use SSL.

Follow these steps using with any registry editor software for Pocket PC:
1. Open the registry editor
2. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Inbox
3. Create a new DWORD value ForceOffSSL and give it a value of 1, Base=Decimal (tap Edit, and New DWORD Value).
4. Soft-reset device.

[You will need to use a third party registry editor, such as Resco Explorer, or “PHM Registry Editor,” which is a freeware program to make the registry changes. (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pocketpc/phmregistry.html)

Note that the install does not work properly with some PPCs, so instead download the .cab file. Just put this in the PocketPC My Documents folder. Do an ActiveSync, and then click on the cab file from within the PPC File Explorer to install.]

So long as your pop3 profile is set up correctly, yes, it should. Don't know if this applies, at all, but when I try to send/receive email from one of my dialup accounts, when I'm hooked up to my broadband account, it won't work. I have to set my receive account to use the settings from my dialup server, but the outgoing mail server settings use my local broadband account settings that I'm using at the time.

Unfortunately, that means that when I'm at a place like Panera's that has free wi-fi access, I can receive but not send email using my pop3 server settings.

Don't know if any of this will be helpful. Let me know.
