Every now and then I come across a program that MUST be installed to the device itself. This usally only occurrs with things that interface with the "Today" screen or which are actually "Today" plugins.
Except for these circumstances, I ALWAYS specify that the program should be installed to my SD card. Nothing will get installed automatically to either the SD or CF flash cards unless you sepcifically request it. The installation of most software asks if you want to install to the default directory. You answer NO to that question and then a scrollable window pops listing the Device, BIS (if using WM 2003), CF card, and SD card. You highlight the one on which you want the program placed.
Frequently, you will get a return message stating that the program was designed for a previous version of WM and may not work. Most programs will work, however. Sometimes you will get a message stating that the program cannot be installed on a flash card. Some programs that need to be installed to the device itself seem to install to a flash card OK, but will not run properly. Removing them and reinstalling to the correct place usually fixes this. If you read the intallation instructions for most programs they will inform you if they need to be installed to the device itself. Othersise, you need to experiment. But, as stated above, installation to the SD card usually works OK.
