Question about updating X51v with A06 ROM

When I updated the ROM of my X51v to A04, it was brand-new and I didn't have any programs installed yet. I gather from the posts I have been reading here that the backup/restore utility on the X51v doesn't seem to work after hard resetting for the A06 upgrade. It sounds like people are having to reinstall everything.

My question is - what is the best way to handle it? Why doesn't the data get restored after syncing? Forgive me - I am pretty new to PocketPC and Outlook. My experience is with Palm, where it was a simple matter to sync and restore data from the desktop. I want to make absolutely sure I don't overwrite my PIM data or something during the sync.

My other question is this - I have many programs installed to my CF and SD cards - probably more than to the device itself. What is on the cards isn't going to be erased by the hard reset, but do I still need to reinstall the applications in order to preserve the shortcuts to them?

Thanks for any help!

The data from outlook will get restored after you sync.

When you update to A06 it's like when you first took it out of the box. You'll need to re-sync etc.

If you have copied data onto the device you would want to manually copy that off the device before you update so you don't lose it.

The data on the cards won't be lost, but you will lose the shortcuts and registry information, so yes, you should go and reinstall them.

Agree with you. I did exactly what you have described above. I backed up My Documents to my CF card, did a sync, made a copy of my data in Microsoft Outlook and then did the ROM A06 update. After the update I did an sync, copied My Documents data back onto my unit. Then I did a reinstall of all of my other applications and made the personal settings in my unit. Worked like a charm.

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like updating the ROM shouldn't be too bad (I hope).

Do you or anyone else happen to know - I am trying to find where the Axim stores my WiFi settings. I have WEP keys for a couple of different networks that will be a pain to re-enter - is that information stored anywhere.

To Update or Not to Update.... that is the question.... I have the x51v 624mhz running AO1 ROM, yes AO1... i received it just before christmas... and to be honest, haven't had any serious issues, the occasional soft reset when installing or, just plain doing too much at once... I already have lots of programs installed and preferences, setup, etc.... I just can't decide if I should just suck it up, go to A06 and reinstall everything, or just go with the philosphy, if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

I'm with you. Mine is also an X51v with the A01 ROM. I've had some lockups that a soft reset takes care of (though not as many since I disabled error reporting) and it will also lockup quite a bit during active sync. For awhile I had a problem with it not seeing the CF card, but that seems to be ok now. So I'm not sure I wanna update, especially since I'm seeing that the A06 may not take care of the lockups.

My compact flash card is being delivered today... so I will see if i have that dissappearing issue I have heard about... but being a former palm user... soft resets were a daily thing with the newer palm os's anyway... does anyone know of any potential downside to not updating our roms just yet?

Yes, I upgraded from A04 to A06 yesterday evening and even though the description on Dell's website still claims that one can restore a previous THIS DOES NOT WORK, i.e. exactly as with the previous update from A01 to A04 the backup utility claims the backup was made on a WM 2003 SE device (which is clearly wrong) and refuses to restore the file. So you are back to point zero and have to REINSTALL EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH!.

Well, I made the move to upgrade last night. It was a pain having to reinstall everything, but I got it done without any major problems noticed (thus far, at least). One weird thing is that on my first sync after the hard reset, all of my Outlook stuff was installed except for Contacts, for no apparent reasing. Soft resetting the device and rebooting the computer resolved this. Kind of weird.

I haven't noticed any major benefits yet. No CF/SD card disappearances, but I hadn't been noticing that much lately anyway (maybe because I've been soft resetting a lot with software installation).

One thing that does seem better is the ability of the keyboard input method to suggest words that have been used before. This device has been my first experience with a PPC, and I thought that it was supposed to suggest words based on words you've typed before, but I didn't get the feeling it was doing that before. This time, it is very snappy with using my prior entries to suggest words.

On one of the other forums about upgrading to the A06, there were reports of losing MS Office programs; Word, Excel, & PPT.

Is this still an issue upon upgrading to A06?

Word, Excel, & PPT came on the device and when I did a re-install of A04, it these programs were still there with the exception of the extra stuff like MS & Adobe Readers & a couple of games.

Thanks in advance!
