Wireless hangs on turn-on

I have an X51v with A06 rom, and when I go into the Dell WLAN utility and turn on wireless, I get the rotating ball forever, and nothing helps other than a soft reset. I'm starting to think the answer to the problem is to find something that'll drill through my titanium case, so I can reset it without taking it out every time. Can anyone help????

click on settings below the (turn on button in wlan utility). If you have wep on your wireless network it will ask you to enter it, if not just click connect. It searchs for networks for you and any near by, just click on yours.

Bubble, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I don't get to that point - if I turn on wireless, I just get the wait cursor and a soft reset is the only way I can get back in control of things. After that it works great. I can power it off and on all I want for a while, and it works great with whatever access point I'm using.. But if I leave it off for a few hours and try again, same deal. Weeeird.

Thanks,
Tim

If you have been using Odyssey make sure you go back into Odyssey-->Settings and tap on the "Disable Odyssey" selection. I didn't and fought with the Dell WLAN Utility for a couple of hours until I realized what I hadn't done.

I've run A06 for two days now. My WLAN has worked every time.

Hmm, I went into it at one point.. I'll try the 'disable' thing - I think I did 'exit' before.. Maybe this will help!

Daggummit, Dell - everything else was a big improvement, shame wireless had to get toasted in the process.

I've already filed a case.. Do they have an actual fix, or are you suggesting to call them so they'll hear from users about what they're broken?

If Odyssey is causing trouble then why not just take it out from the start up folder so it doesn't even run. I took out mine and my wireless works fine.

I just got off the phone with Dell. We went through a fairly straightforward series of maneuvers & verified that the WLAN is hopelessly flakey. They're shipping me a new X51v. However, they could not say for sure if this was a ROM (A06) problem, or a hardware problem. Time will tell.

Interesting. I think I'll keep my hardware - it was totally fine with A04, so I think the ROM update is at fault. I don't have much software installed - maybe if I get bored, I'll hard reset and try to isolate the problem. As it is, I can replicate my problem reliably. Here's the scenario, in case anyone else sees it:

From a cold start (totally off, starts up with blue Dell logo screen, to Windows Mobile screen), the wireless can be turned on and off without fail. The problem can be seen by setting the "auto-off" time in "power" to a known value, turning off wireless, and either letting the device time out and turn off, or turning if off myself. If the device turned off on its own, the problem can be replicated on the next power up. If it was turned off manually, it needs to be left off at least as long as the timeout time. After that, you can turn on the device and replicate the problem.

In other words, when the OS gets into a sleep mode, the problem will always show up on my unit.

Really, I'm getting used to it. Sad, I know - I wouldn't tolerate this from my car for instance.. However, the other improvements have been so vast for me - the filesystem access seems much much faster than before - that I'm dealing with it for now.

Is it possible to go back to say an A04 ROM? Or once you move forward, are you stuck forever?

Sorry for the long post! :approve:

Tim

Yes it is possible. Just did that to get the WPA support back with A04.

Thats the best way of putting it. WLAN is really messed up thanks to A06.

Its definately the A06 update and not hardware, because on A04 I never had such problems with WLAN.

Im rolling back to A04 in a moment. Seriously want to put this issue to bed and enjoy the x51v again.
