I did the SD image process to correct a WM5 that was hanging at 40% of the boot process (dell logo screen). Everything goes fine (reading image, writing flash, etc) until it gets to "Erasing storage" . It stops half way thru that and throws the "Image update fail (-1)" message. I have recopied the files to the SD card, used the SD card boot loader instead of the built in one, re-downloaded the images, used different one, etc, with no success. I ran the diags and they all passed. Ideas or suggestions? Any help appreciated.

Found them
Thanks to the skills / generosity of your EXCELLENT Forum members (and some searching around), I found the files I needed at:
http://rapidshare.de/users/1VXNG
Needless to say they worked perfect, and my X50V brick is now the amazing tool it was before!!
I am sure it is a 'sensitive topic' and Dell doesn't want to admit / expose AXIM architectural details, but these files / this recovery technique could probably save Dell THOUSANDS in RMA / postage / technical support !!
I trust their own staff monitor this site and its Forums !!
Thanks again,
Roger:)

No luck what-so-ever. I tried Wireless+power+reset, and it just starts up with question of whether i want to lose all data etc etc, then the dell logo and progress bar. Then it hangs. again. very frustrating.

To get to the Image Update Screen.
hold WIRELESS + POWER
then press the reset button WITHOUT letting off WIRLESS + POWER
then you will get to the screen =D

This was the BOMB!!! Thanks man, I must have pressed that combination a couple hundred times. Worked on first try after I read that post. I really got to learn to read everything before coming to conclusions.
Thanks again everyone. Axim is alive again!! Rolled back to Windows 2003.

I gave up on reflashing WM5 and I flashed it back to WM2003 and it worked. Many thanks for this thread.

hi yosmo52
Unfortunately none of the rom dumps produce a valid .img for flashing, either the os dump or the bootloader dump. I've got a dead axim stuck at the dell logo (this seems to be common) and also a replacement axim which I've been attempting to do a rom dump of to revive the dead brick.
None of the rom's work with the SD update and I receive the "No Suitable Image found".
Has anyone made any more progress producing a rom for the x51v?

p.s here's where I'm at with dumping a rom for the X51v:
grabit.exe - Dump created but is corrupted, 128mb and 256mb version tried http://www.hjgode.de/dev/grabit/
- testdump.exe - rom dump ok, but appears to start at the os level and does not include the bootloader
- osloader-1.5.6.exe - errors messages when the utility is run. No useful dumps created.
Using testdump.exe aa os dump can be created but the naming conventions for the SD flash update on the X51v appear to have changed. Therefore we need to examine the bootloader rom to see what we should call the files.

Does anyone know the codename of the X51 (for the X50 it was DiMaggio), therefore the prefix was DiMa? Might be Dell has similar filename conventions for the X51...

why may i ask you want to revive the brick is it because it was a new one and the replacement refurbished? probably you had it bricked after the first 21 days from the order date. i hope someone would create a program for snatching the x51 rom as this is a must backup for this sensitive device i don't think the hps collapse so much

Good news, I've got a valid French x51v Rom, it was kindly sent to me from an hacksim.com member, he got it from Dell. The files names are DiAd_K_A01_12220500FRA_HC.nb0 and DiAd_K_A01_12220500FRA_HC_nb0.crc. But I don't have the bootlader. So I guess it will only work on french device that is embedding a french bootloader.

Could you perhaps upload this file somewhere?
I'd love to try whether it also works on the X50v...

Give me a place to upload it or give me your mail address. But how can you use it if you don't have a french bootloader. Also is it possible to change the language with your method if we have rom in different language but only the english bootloader?

would be great if you could upload it to www.rapidshare.de .
with the x50 series the bootloader is language and even device independent, so i guess this will be the same with the x51
