Thanks for your help, but I do not get a menu... I get the same hard reset screen. I hope I am not the first to have had their hopes washed away. Sux to have a dead Axim just staring back at me.

Keep trying the combination. It took me about 20 tries before I got the SD Update screen instead of the Hard Reset screen. There is probably some specific timing of the buttons required, and you will eventually stumble across it if you keep trying. Also make sure the SD is formatted FAT32 and not FAT, as that may also prevent the SD Update screen from showing.

I can't beleive it... I was so frustrated I took it out on my Axim by pressing the wireless+power+rest repeatedly (very, very quickly, like 5 times a second) for around 10 to 20 seconds and I came up with a white screen that allowed me to reflash the OS. Now I am not risking it and am going back to 2003 SE by way of Dell's support page. Hope to join you all in WM5 world once (and if) a patch is available. My Axim is out of warranty and I thought I was really dead. I can now put my Clie back in its drawer where it has been for the last 3 years.

Just press WiFi and power buttons for couple of seconds, no need to press reset.

Ops, that was so only on dead device.

Are you able to use the "Data Backup"'s Restore feature?
not only data but also the programs?

Somehow with this patch, restore never works.
I'd be curious to know if works for you.

Hi, I am new, but have managed to perform the update and my x50v is up and running. To get to the SD update screen, press the power+wireless first, then a quick push (less then 1 sec) on the reset button. I found that if your reset is longer than 1 sec, it goes into hard reset. Hope it works for you.

If you made the backup using the original WM5 A01, you can restore it after my patch. If you made the backup with any other version, it is like trying to restore it under A01 and it will likely say it is incompatible. You can't restore a backup made on WM2003 into WM5. Even if you can trick it into working, it's not a good idea, as WM5 installs apps differently than WM2003 did. My patch is exactly the same as A01 except for two bytes -- which increases a "sleep" call from 0 seconds to 0xFFFF seconds.

Thanks, I do understand what you patch does, and I'm aware of the fact that you can't restore a wm2k3 backup on wm5
but that is not what I'm doing.

Just to clarify Here's all that I did.
1- Already have unpatched WM5 A01 with all my apps installed and configured,
2- Backup All data
3- Install the patched ROM, Hard reset
4- Attempt to restore data, it hangs at 3% and never goes past that
5- Hard reset, install few apps
6- Backup (we're still on patched rom)
7- Attempt to restore the backup in step 6, fails yet again. (By the way a PIM only restore works fine, it's just Full Data that fails)
8- Repeat 1-7 yet another time, in case I erred, same story
9- revert the ROM to unpatched version
10- Attempt to restore either backup (from step 2 or step 6) works just fine.

I'm sure you'd agree that this proves that the patched rom has an issue with restore, perhaps filesys polling is necessary for the proper restore operation.
What else it could be necessary for?

I really wanted to move to the patched version, as I hate the slow response of wm5 A01
but without being able to restore all my data and configuration, I'm in no mood to start all over again.

Thanks for all the hard work, I'm sure eventually we'd have all the answers and fixes.

I'd still be curious to know if this behavior is only on my Axim? or if it is a common behavior.

Thanks

Thanks for pointing that out.
Does that mean restore works for you with a patched ROM?
how do you explain restore working for me without any issues on an unpatched ROM
and I never get SD removed message or anything, it just hangs there at 3% only with a patched ROM. (waited over an hour with no luck)

I'm not even sure that there's a known Backup/restore issue with an unpatched ROM (which works for me) and apparently for apmichael as well
from that same thread

I can do data backup in my X50V under WM5. I can also restore from a backup. Although both backup and restore take looooooong time, at least they works. BTW, the backup was stored onto my 1G SD card.

I dont use restore or have the patch installed. I just noticed alanbr having a problem restoring when there is a lot of data on an unpatched X50v. I guess it's conceivable that the modification could stop restore from working but it does seem unlikely. Perhaps you're just trying to restore more data than before and have hit the bug?

Edit: I cant explain why it works for you on the unpatched ROM if it's the same data unless perhaps if the backup was made from the original unpatched rom and it notices that your registry is different than it expects.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yes it is the exact same data that I attempted to restore.
I am now trying on my colleagues Axim, the exact same test, I'll report back.

Backup detecting a mismatch is theoretically a possibility, but I'm inclined to dismiss it for now, because
1- the change is not a registry change
2- The restore doesn't complain, it just fails, one would imagine that if there's any check, the restore would not continue, or at least warn instead of silently hanging at 3%.

Let's see how the second X50v behaves.

How long did you wait at 3%? Give it plenty of time and I think you'll find it eventually continues on. If it is still there after an hour, it's time to give up. I have to admit I have not yet tried a full restore with the patched rom. I did a clean install of all my apps just to start from a blank slate. I avoided installing any tweaks (except for the activesync fake server fix).

There is nothing different in the registry with the patch, so I think we can rule that out as a cause.

When I installed all my apps, I noticed that some installs took longer than I expected. Bunnydoku, for instance, almost seemed to freeze, but it did finish after quite a while. That app installs about 500 little files for predefined games. I suspect there is something related to writing lots and lots of files to flash that causes a delay.
