In my experience however, transferring media files using Activesynce, sd card transfers, wifi network transfers etc. doesn't make a difference.
Well as I mentioned originally I get a dialog box from ActiveSync saying it is converting the files... So I thought that perhaps ActiveSync does something with the files to make them work fine on my PPC...

ActiveSync is probably messing up your files.

Use a card reader like everyone suggests and copy directly to your card.

just:
1. Share the folder with the file on your comp.
2. Use Resco Explorer to map that folder and grab it.

Easy enough.

I've done that... My files are still not being read by TCPMP...

If I were to use this Resco Explorer, would I need to install it onto my Axim?

Will take a while to copy large files, but will get the job done.
I know the thread is about copying files over to the device ... but I just want to further accentuate on what you have informed the community ;)

~~~ media files CAN also be played DIRECTLY over the network ( shared folder) WITHOUT having to copy them over ;) ~~~
I say bad card reader
I download dl.tv videos in all sorts of formats. all the time and copy them to my SD card using a reader... never a problem. My money is on a bad card reader.
Or format the SD cards and try again..
A few thoughts:
1. I've got an 8gb CF and load DivX avi files to it all the time...Using a CF card reader (Using Activesync would be wayyyy too slow). The videos play fine in TCPMP.
2. You may have corrupte avi files, copying files over using a card readers should NOT have any impact on the files when being played back.
3. Perhaps the options you chose to encode the video/audio is incompatible with TCPMP. I copied over a bunch of TV Shows the other day and got an AC3 error, then I found a plug-in at the TCPMP site to allow me to play avi files with AC3 audio. Check out their site for more info
4. Maybe you DO have a bad SD reader, try copying some other type of simple file (like text) and see if it read ok.
Good luck!
I had a similar problem once, and in my case it was tracked down to the card reader:
Large .avi files were showing as unreadable by Betaplayer. I tried re-formatting the card and everything - still no luck. However, the card reader worked fine doing the transfer on a CF card ! So, I suspected my SD card... but, all my SD cards were failing in the reader ???
The break-through came after two events:
1. I generated a 300mb jpeg on my PC and transfered it to SD using my card reader. I couldn't get it to open anywhere - PC or PDA.
2. I borrowed a friend's card reader to transfer my .avi files to SD. They opened fine every time.
Looking at it in more detail later, my knackered card reader would corrupt files if they were above a certain size. In my case that was in the region of 250mb.
I don't know if there's anything to draw from that for your problems.
I think that might be it, a bad SD reader... Cause so far I've had only one AVI file work fine via it... and sometimes I'd have garbled folders or data on the card... The odd thing is that the Reader is a San Disk (USB) brand SD and CF reader, I would have thought it would be the best reader (well it is my brother's reader) for my SD card since it is the same brand.
Any suggestions as to what kind of reader I should get?
Some of the ones I am looking at, at the moment, include:
When I tried to transfer large files onto my SD card, using my suspect card reader, then I also got garbled folders and data on the card.
One of my IT mates muttered something like 'buffer size problems' on some card-readers, but I neither had the knowledge to appreciate what he was saying, nor the knowledge to judge it.
I bought a cheap Belkin replacement card-reader, which has worked fine.
