Thanks for the information. I haven't had any problems since my update of A06, but made the changes anyway. I do have a question for you. When I sync my Axim I get a pop up saying unable to obtain a server-assigned IP Address. Try again later or enter an IP setting. Now everything syncs find I just want to get rid of the pop up. Can you help me?
Hmm...seeing this info makes me want to try upgrading my x50v back to WM5. Do I even dare??

I was having the power drain problem because active sync kept loading even when not in the cradle. Applied the fix and Active sync no longer starts on it's own when not in the cradle. Battery life is much better and RAM is much better.
Moderator - Can you please consider making this sticky. If not here in the x51v hardware forum. This is the only way to stop this question being asked constantly!

Many thanks for your most informative post. I have just got my Axim X51v and have experienced the power on and battery discharge problems that everyone else seems to have. It was disappointing reading the posts which were "sick" of talking about these "old" issues. Not much help to a "newbie". Anyway more power to you, I have just applied the active sync fix and am hopeful that all will be well in the morning.

I'm not going near the whole x50v WM5 upgrade situation with a 10 foot pole! :approve:
Actually this fix made the x50v on WM5 quite usable for me. Yes the results are nearly the same. I still have the card disappearing once in a while, but fixing activesync completely resolved the battery drain issues I was having.
I must admit to being pretty skeptical when I read about this panacea for WM5. I mean why should stopping ActivSync firing up prevent issues with CF cards etc? However I decided to follow the masses and now I'm a believer!
When I wasn't using my cradle, I didn't suffer from losing my CF card, but what I did get when coming out of standby were messages saying that my CF card was unrecognised. However these messages would blink off straight away and my CF card would work as normal. Since implementing this fake exchange server trick, I no longer get these messages. This convinces me that ActivSync is a culprit in CF issues.
Aha! This is something I was going to mention, but didn't because of lack of experience with an Axim and an Exchange Server. I think I'll put a little note in about this.
One question - do you actually have power on problems etc? If not I'd leave everything as it is.
If you do have problems with powering on etc then you could set the sync to manual and just sync whenever you need to, and not let the Axim do it automatically.
This does defeat the object of having an Exchange server though. In cases such as this I suppose you need to weigh up the alternatives:
1. Suffer powering up problems/missing CF&SD cards but Activesync syncs automatically to download mail etc.
2. Cure the power/CF&SD card problems but have to manually sync.
Neither is ideal, but it will have to do until Dell fix it properly I suppose. Anyone else have experience with this?
thanks for the note. I did initially get the white screen of death, but more recently, and particually after trying to get BT working with my P910i (that's going to be the subject of another post), when i power up it performs a soft reset
I will try and narrow it down a bit more and post again
Yes you can... :)
Make a shortcut of the Lan connection to tha taskbar (by dragging). If you rightclick the icon you can disable the connection, et voìla! By enabling the connection, syncing will start again. The advantage is that the Axim will charge in the craddle, even without the power adapter attached.
Does applying this change have an effect when I do dock the handheld? Would it automatically sync when I dock or do I have to do initiate it by pressing a button.
I have been using A04 and have been reluctant to move to A06 given people's feedback. In addition, I have been lucky to not be experiencing these problems on A04 (knock on wood).
Is it advisable to move to A06 with this ActiveSync change and not experience these problems?
The solution I have used to resolve the same issues for my X51V was to turn on BT (Blue Tooth) and leave it on all of the time. For my experience this is much easier to reapply when ROM updates have been preformed. My experience is that the small amount of battery loss (2% over 8 hours while the unit is off) was acceptable to me. Since doing this I have had zero instances of CF/SD loss, battery over heating/loss, white screens when syncing and 'Dose Not Turn On' issues. Just my experience for an alternative should the fine solution mentioned here be to compmlicated to impliment for others.
