never had issues due to exchange server is used.
Well I do sync with an exchange server so I did get access to this option and I only want the unit to sync when "I want it to" so I set it to manually right from the start. Thus must be why I've never had the aforementioned problems..
Also A06 ROM fixed a severe slow down or lock up issue I had with Tomtom 5 after tracking a long route. It almost seemed like a memory leak. After A06 voila issue solved...

Hi Thunder_PC.
Sorry that this didn't work out for you. I wouldn't give up on the Axim without trying a replacement though - there are definitely some that are destined not to work no matter what like yours, but there are definitely some that will work with a bit of persuasion.
Report your problems to Dell who will probably offer you a refurb. DEMAND A BRAND NEW ONE! :approve:
Then if that doesn't work, sell it. Although that will become another problem if the person you sell to starts having issues with it...

Hello Thunder_PC
my advice would be to stick with it until dell get there act together and sort this problem out, its a totaly waste of time exchanging pda's as the new one will have the same bugs, trust me ive been there.

Exactly why I am thinking of just selling it. I have no desire to keep swapping units hoping to get "a good one". The terrible bluetooth stack infuriates me too. That's what I get for not properly researching before purchasing though. I should have known with the volume of Dell PCs/and notebooks I see for repair to look elsewhere, but it *seemed* like a good deal compared to the higher end iPaqs for the money. It turned out to be too good to be true ;). I'm not arguing the potential this device has, as it certainly has some very nice hardware. Dell just should have never released it (or at least x51 series/WM5) until they had their ducks in a row. Mguess is they didn't want to e beat to market with WM5 PDAs, so they are using us as the beta testers. :realmad:

Great Instructions
You did a great job with the instructions. I followed them and it works great. Why doesn't Dell post this fix on their web site? I called them personally and they told me it was a known problem and that Microsoft was working on it and the only fix was to either keep it in the docking cradle or to do a backward upgrade to an older operating system such as PPC 2002 or 2003. This was not really an option. The fix you had was easy and I already tried it out last night. I didn't not keep it plugged into the power supply and it came right up this morning. Before the fix if I didn't keep it plugged into a power source overnight the power would be drained. Again, thank you so much for the instructions.

Thank you!
Been getting the WSOD lately (mainly when syncing to the desktop). Just applied this fix, hope it works!

I applied this "fix" and I have gotten the WSOD twice since then. It *might* reduce the battery drain although I never noticed an issue with that. It does NOT appear to fix the issue with the device not turning on and requiring a soft reset. Swapping for another one with the same issue won't cut it.

Hey. Just got my X51V for christmas. I had noticed the problems mentioned (wsod) unable to restart after stby, very hot battery...plus being drained rapidly. Just stumbled across this forum and tried the trick. So far it seems to have worked. 3hours and the battery hasn't budged. As I did the fix I could feel the temp reduce on the backside of the unit. I have brought it out and put it in stby 15-20 times and no problems. running A01...haven't done too much reading yet, but what benefit going to A06? On another note...I will never purchase another DELL product. I was lied to and ripeed off by DELL, but that story is for a differnt thread.
Thanks again for the tip :approve:

Works for me...
Picked up a 2nd hand v51x earlier this week; previous owner sold it because it did not support his Chinese application - I suggested that he consider the X30 or X50 refurbs available from Dell. Original purchase date was November 2005.
He had performed the A06 update, and reported no issues. Before completing the sale, I checked out the wireless, CF and SD visibility, etc. Did not note any issues.
Of course, once I got it home, I did have a few issues with ActiveSync, and a couple of crashes with my XP system upon dociking - what a surprise.
So...I applied the fake server tip. It now is working fine, and no problems. As for battery, it was fully charged yesterday, and when I turned it on today, it still showed 100%.
I'll be giving it a workout in the coming weeks, and report back on any issues.
And to those having issues, I feel your pain. No one wants to have a product that is flaky or troublesome. From my experience, I encourage any still having problems to either review the step-by-step carefully; no shortcuts. Or return unit to Dell for exchange or refund. If you purchased unit with a credit card, exercise your rights with the credit card company and refuse payment if you did not get a good unit. Simply griping will NOT resolve anything. You have to take action with someone who can resolve the issue.
PS I sat on my beloved X30 last week, and it bit the dust...

This doesn't work for me. It doesn't work not because of it can't solved my missing CF card problem(I don't know yet). But it stop me from synchronize my machine with the PC through BT anymore. Even if I press the sync button on the ActiveSync screen manually.
I finally revert it back.

This fix works for me. I don't have a dis-appering cf card no more. The best thing is I don't have to soft reset my X51V every now and them. I was about to resurrect my Ipaq 1910 and keep the Axim just for watching DVD until I crossed this fix. Before, I have to soft reset the Axim and wait a few minutes to get it started before I can take notes. It's pretty embarrasing to pull out the Axim and wait for it to start while your co-workers were making fun out of you and started handing you a piece of paper to write notes. Those days are over! Thabks

Active Sync problems...
I have not notice any difficulties with my Axim; is this only with the 5 series (5/50/51, etc.)? I just upgraded my sync to 4.1, and my ROM to A06, and havenoticed only one issue; MS Reader (ebook) is installed, but not recognised... even after deletion, from both the handheld and my pc, and reinstalled... hmmm. Any thoughts?

This only applies to x51 and x51v. It doesn't work on every X51(v) though unfortunately.
Some also report that it works for x50(v)+WM5 as well in certain cases.
This is all mentioned in the thread - have a read through next time!

I got WSOD twice last couple days. ActiveSync fix is applied, the Exchange server is still there and schedule set to manual. What happened was that I left the Axim charging overnight with BT & Wifi turned off and SD card in the unit. When I wake up, WSOD and the wifi green indicator is on and soft reset is req'd. I need to figure out what made the wifi to turn on by itself, maybe it's the Oydessey client, but I need that for my WPA-PSK connection and the WLAN wifi configure screen has gone missing on me as well. More troubleshooting for me.
