Cheap Mobile 5 upgrade CDs on eBay?! Also upgrade questions...

I was on eBay and there are a ton of what sellers claim to be are unopened, unused Windows Mobile 5 upgrade CDs for 99 cents or so.

Am I missing something? Are they pirated? And if not, how are they so cheap when Dell is selling them for $40?!

I also had a couple questions about upgrading -

- Is it possible to "upgrade" to Mobile 5 using, say, a regular Mobile 5 CD that shipped with, say, an X51? Is there a difference between the Mobile 5 CD that ships with an X51 vs. and X51V?

- How can I find out if there are any ROM updates I should get? I have an X50V and am running A02. If there are, where do I get them?

It doesn't come with a CD to install the system.
It is just like the X50v, it came with the OS installed already (only WM5 instead of 2003SE).

There is a ROm update to A05 on the Dell site. I believe that is the most recent out. If you find anything newer out, let me know ;-)

I'll look for it, thanks.

So does anyone know if these upgrade CDs on eBay are on the up-and-up? Anyone buy one before?

They probably are. I mean, maybe the person who is selling it got fed up with the upgrade on their x50v. :)

You can always ask the seller and save all correspondence in case you get into trouble. ;)

People complain how dell never provides upgrades. Now that they finally made an upgrade cd everyone has been bitching. Dell will never make another upgrade if they don't make money off it. Just buy it from dell.

Actually even though it cost more I would have preferred that, but I couldn't find it on their site any more.

There's a chance that week later they will finally release updated version. However I wouldn't expect that. Don't go for eBay version. Don't pay pirates. You are pay for it the full amount or get it for free. Other choices are not wise.
In any case I suggest you to wait until it will be again available on the Dell site as the current version is not a good choice.

Well. Let make it so, whenever you buy it from eBay, you pay money to someone who downloaded it from p2p network and recorded on a CD. In that case you'd better get it from p2p network yourself as otherwise you are paying to someone who did nothing to earn that money.

I bought mine from ebay closer to when it came out, and it was 100% legit, if you get a burned copy, i think you can report them to e-bay becuase i don't think they allow sales like that

I paid like $15 at the time, but it wa a brand new still wrapped dell WM5 set of cd's

Actually I think eBay's policy is that you have to be the one affected before you report something. Say, if a pirate Harry Potter DVD went up only Warner Brothers could do anything about it.
At least, that's what I remember reading somewhere.

There are two prices for OATS; before & after they have been thru the horse.

At this point WM05 should be in the "AFTER" category. Hopefully it can be fixed to "BEFORE" status soon.

It's not a problem to do an exact copy of Dell upgrade CD.
In Russia we have a lot of pirate CDs which looks like original ones. Exact copies.
Once again I tell you don't pay people for nothing. Don't buy it on eBay.

In any case it's illegal to sell your upgrade CD. Read the license agreement.
