For now, the only use I have for this unit is browsing the internet while soiling myself. In fact, I leave it and charge it in the washroom. For work and other stuff, I use the X50V with 2003SE.
Oh my god! Thats the funniest thing Ive read in a while. Sorry if that was offtopic. :)
I have a new x51v...upgraded to latest ROM (A06)..I tried to restore from a backup after the upgrade...it really didn't work...then I installed my software...had all kinds of issues with WiFi, Activesync, etc. I did a hard reset....reinstalled everything as if it was brand new...and now it works perfectly....no issues or problems to report...connects to my laptop...connects to my Exchange Server....perfect! Lesson learned!
It's Dell's "9 buisness days of savings"... not too much time left (sorry, just found the link a couple of minutes ago).
I have some of the issues that I read about, but nothing that renders my Axim inoperable.... :approve:
(sorry, just saw Raynman's post... hate to double up the same info... later! )

Reason: Just saw Raynman post
I constantly see (on other forums and blogs) people saying that they will not get a Dell Pocket PC because 'everyone' is having problems (on AximSite). I want to explain something which should in it-self be self explanatory.
AximSite currently has 115,207 members. I will make a wild guess by saying that half the users own either an X50(v) or an X51(v). Thats 57604 people on this forum alone. Do you see 57604 people complaining about their Axims? No, you only see those people who are having problems. :throwcomp They exist, and Axims do have some problems, but do not make your "to buy or not to buy" decision on these posts alone.
If your device is working fine, do you go on a forum and let everyone know? "Hi, I have no problems with my Axim. Cool. Close this thread please." No, when people don't have problems, they don't post about it. Only a small percentage of Axim users are seriously outraged, the majority aren't.
Don't make your decision based on the opinion of a minority. Do your own research, and a well educated decision yourself.
WHAT A CROCK OF SHIT !!! Do you work at Disneyland? :rolling:
Didn't you READ the complaints before making this stupid prediction? Everyone here LOVES their Axim. It's the WM5 upgrade we have a problem with.
I really need the missing bluetooth profiles. My primary daily uses are:
1) mp3 music & ebooks + pocket Tv via bluetooth headphones on the transit,
2) transfering contacts to my Moto Razr via bluetooth
3) transfering pics from Moto Razr to x30h via bluetooth
4) DUN internet from x30h over to Moto Razr via bluetooth
5) regular PDA stuff
Out of the list above, only #5 is likely to work for me on teh x51v. not acceptable.
#4 should work fine. I use bluetooth to connect theX51v to the internet using GPRS via my Nokia 6230, and it's rock-solid. It's the most stable PDA I've ever used for the purpose.
This machine is designed for 2003, not WM5. It was a big mistake of DELL to sell upgrade CD for WM5. X50V users shouldnt complain, because the machine is cheap and has high performance. It works steady and does almost everything with its original OS (2003).
We have every right to complain. I didn't get I was told or expecting with the Windows Mobile 5 upgrade. Dell keeps lying and say wait till next week, week after week. It's been a couple months, where are the updates and support. How about my money, no.
How the hell can you say we have no right to complain. You might say well the ones who paid for it do but the ones who got it for free dont. Wrong. Those who got it for free were weasled into buying an x50 instead of waiting for an x51 hecause of the promised OS upgrade.
I'm sticking with Windows Mobile 2003SE for now but I bought my Dell Axim x50v expecting an upgrade. You may feel mobile 5 doesn't offer much, but not everyone else agrees with you.
It's a very simple thing, and only people for whom the x51v is the first ppc dont understand: PPC are made for serious on the road use. I am a lawyer in germany. If I meet a client on the street or in a restaurant he wants to make an appointment with me for advice. He wants the appointment made NOW. I have to say: "Sorry Sir, wait 2 minutes, I have to soft reset my device." Than I should expect him waiting two minutes until - maybe - i am able to lookup free time for an appointment? That's ridicolous! And after a day the battery is empty... hey, come on, it's a PORTABLE device!!!
And if I have to drive to a court in a another city i have to pray "dear lord, let my axim connect to my bluetooth gps device today, amen". That's unacceptable.
I had a Casio Cassiopeia E-125 G. This device only needed a soft reset if i put wrong software on it. There were month where i did not need a soft reset. Sometimes i forgot how to do it. And - strange enough - the Casio still seems faster than the x51v to me.
A PPC is NOT a PC with a Windows 98 or XP on it. It is made for fast on the road use. A soft reset in an office is a minor problem. And the worst thing is... they dont have any upgrades for german axims ... my rom is still version a00.
Maybe this is alright if you sell childrens toys. But it's not what i call a Pro-Attitude.
my x51v is a bleeding edge piece of hardware. Not too many people have one. As a matter of fact, I am the only one I know that has one. Thus the development track at dell and microsoft are not going to be too fast. It's a good thing we have aximsite and it's a good thing that I am a gadgeteer (lol). I have fun working out the problems. Now, my x51v is working great. That wasn't always the case. The A06 rom seems to have addressed the BT issue for now (hanging the system when turning back on from suspend mode) and I'm sure they are working on a new BT stack release. I have a holux gpslim 236 and I have no problems with tomtom 5.0 finding it. I've never had the lost cf/sd issue (i updated to a04 the day I got the thing).
Go read this site and you'll have an awesome handheld. If you don't have the time or patience or you just plain hate tinkering with something you've spent 400 bucks for, I'd say that high end pda's are not for you regardless of the brand (i.e. when i was using my old palm Vx for just PIM, it was very much an out of the box works everday with no glitches device.) Just my 2 cents.
I know I should read all this but I haven't had chance yet.
Can all you knowledgeable people please advise whether I am likely to experience problems with the following on an X51v I am thinking of buying over the next month or two.
- Bluetooth TomTom GPS
- Wi-Fi for Pocket IE access at hotels
- Bluetooth for GPRS to a Nokia 6680 phone
I will be out of the country and away from my PC for a couple of weeks and need these things to function without fault (I can live with the occasional soft-reset but nothing more as I will be PC-less).
Thanks, and sorry, I will get round to reading all these posts soon.
You're an attorney and clients stop you on the street to make appointments? My boss would so just tell them to call the office! I don't know of any attorney who would pull out their PDA to make an appointment for a client on the road. Us paralegals usually highly discourage attorneys from attempting to do such things without assistance. It usually ends up needing to be rescheduled because I've scheduled something for her since she synced before court that morning. Me and my office buddies here are just at the thought of our bosses making their own appointments. Sorry, just struck me as extremely funny!
I love my Axim! I'm glad I didn't read all the naysayers here before buying mine. If I would have read this forum before purchasing, I would have never bought it and would be missing out on all the fun! Of course, YMMV. If you use bluetooth, probably not the best for you. I use WiFi (yes, even on the toilet!), play games, PIM, and listen to music. It's more than I even thought it would be!

It's ironic then that I have 2 X51v's, purchased months apart that have exactly the same problems!
Your logic assumes that everyone on Aximsite uses their Axims and everyone is aware of and reporting their problems.
Hypothetical SWAGs aside, there is NO question that Windows Mobile 5.0 and especially Active Sync 4.1 are both full of problems that make what is probably a fine piece of hardware, difficult to enjoy and all too often a real pain in the butt!
My comments and a few cents shy of $5.00 will get you a Starbucks! (I'll bet it works "out of the cup" better than my Axims did "out of the box"!)
Absolutely agree! The number of frustrated users posting here, do not reflect the total number of users out there who are frustrated. Not all post as some others have stated. But I will tell you what ARE indications of serious issues with the X50 upgrade that's more revealing. Here's the key - if the numbers of users having issues with the X50 WM5 upgrade were small - are we really believing that Dell would pull sales of the upgrade CD for a "few", or be overwhelmed with support calls, or quickly put out a "rollback" application [It's not a patch people.] so you can go from WM5 back to 2003SE - or run out of X50 exchanges so fast that Dell has to send some users X51 in exchange?
All for just a handful of dissatisfied users? I seriously doubt that Dell is that concerned about a "few" with issues. Anyone else believe Dell would do all this for a "few" users? Hands anyone? I thought not.
If you have a working X50 after an upgrade to WM5, without issues that limit your productivity consider for a moment [in light of Dell's actions listed above], that instead, you might be the minority. Thank your lucky stars and pray that a few months after WM5 is installed, it won't require a hard reset, overheat, and become a brick like so many others have seen after "thinking" they had a working upgrade.
As for the X51 users posting here being indicative of the "lack of" issues with that model. Don't count on that either. Many of us X50 users [and other Axim models] had thought about upgrading to an X51 - then after seeing issues with some of those as well - did not make the purchase. That alone skews the statistics somewhat regarding X51 users as that number would be higher if all of who wanted [past tense] to get an X51 actually did.

Reason: forgot the X51 users

The x51v is certainly not bleeding-edge. Its been available to the general public for months and LOTS of people have them. The operating system it runs has been out of beta for almost a year. You could call it 'leading-edge', but even that is a bit of a stretch at this point.
As far as the 'development track' goes, WM5 is sitting at CRITICAL. When you have product already released and in use that has major problems, this becomes a top priority issue. Don't be confused by the 'beta' culture that Microsoft has fostered over the years. Released products should not be this problematic, and lowering our expectations is only going to encourage it further.
