Axim X51v (A04 ROM update) - is it worth going to A06 ROM update?

Hi,

I've gone through one ROM update (from A01 to A04) when I encountered the popular battery drain problem. g00nerz has helped to write out a solution by changing the device's ActiveSync's schedule (please read his write-up for details) to manual. I've done the steps he outlined and is now testing to see whether I still have the battery drain problem due to auto-launch of ActiveSync on my Axim X51v.

Well, my bottom line is this: If g00nerz outlined solution solved my battery drain problem, is it still worth me the risks to upgrade my ROM from version A04 to A06??

The solution on g00nerz thread has been around for awhile already. This solution/tweak has to be applied to most Axims running whatever rom(A01,A04,A06). Ive done it on my Axim as well(when it had A01, A04 and even now with A06).

There is no real risk regarding upgrading from A04 to A06. You will still however need to apply all the tweaks and solutions to common problems as A06 has not fixed them.

Treat the ROM updates as numbers, they dont do much apart from raise the number count :) . A06 quite a few users notice does bring a little speed benefit. "Seems quicker".

stayput with A04 update on Axim X51v

Ok, I've decided to stayput with A04 update after my power drain problem is solved. Since I can't find a good reason to upgrade from A04 to A06, I figure it is wiser to stayput and enjoy my Axim now.

There'll be more risks that good if one upgrades simply because the ROM update is newer. Unless you have one of the listed problems which is claimed to be solved by this patch (A06)!

I just want to say "thank you" for people who provides the solution to the power drain problem. isn't it cool to have my headache cured? Good job.

I went straight from A01 to A06 (after having all the standard problems). I reapplied the active sync fix but have been really happy for four days now. I may be simple but I believe that newer is always better otherwise why would they release it.
Good luck
Graham

Pros:
* A06 reduced the incidence of losing the flash cards
* Soft Reset when system does not start from suspend

Cons:
* Memory utilization for WM-Media Player rises to over 20MB RAM! Yikes!

Neutral (for me)
* Never had WSOD - so no effect
* Speed? What speed bump?

If you aren't suffering from any of the problems plaguing A04, I recommend staying put.

If you are receiving a new Axim x51v, it may already have A06 on it. To check this out, click on Start, Settings, System information.

A01 is the original ROM.

If there is nothing on the PDA, then just download the A06 ROM from Dell at: http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=151479

Process of upgrading the ROM
1) If you have some application data on the PDA, back it up by copying the files out.
2) Sync the PIM data with Outlook.
3) Upgrade it and resync with Outlook to re-upload the PIM data.
4) Reload any Applications and the data

Flashing the ROM essentially over-writes your OS, and all files on your PDA. It will NOT overwrite files on your Flash Card, however, but applications on it may need to be re-installed.

That's odd. I would have thought that the latest ROM would be automagically loaded on. Thanks for the info!

Got my axim last friday, loaded with A06. As of yet, I have noticed no power drain, etc. But I did have to use the AS Mod for the dissapearing SD/CF cards. Just about drove me mad. Right now, no complaints.

A coworker of mine ordered a brand new x51v from the latest Dell Deals and received his PDA about 2 weeks ago. His ROM is A06. He complained about Battery Drain. I told him to run thru the AS fake server setup to set his AS to manual. I don't know if it will help his Battery Drain problem.
