Buy a Bluetooth USB adaptor for your computer. I bought one from Fry's Electronics for $20 with a $10 rebate which works well with AS 4.1.

For all your color coding and categorizing needs I would strongly suggest you take a look at Pocket Informant. It will do it all and then some. I know where you are coming from on how important these colors are. At a glance I can tell what work evetns, launches, school events, pay days, and vacations are coming up just by their color.

Wireless sync is missing with WM5. I wold look into BT sync. It's easy and will achieve about the same thing. You should be able to sync all over your house without cradling.

Although you don't think it's important now, surfing the web on the fly is one of the most important aspects of my Axim. I also use Verizon and they are great for internet access anywhere. Check out Howard Forums. It may not be an all out hack you have to do. Most of the time a simple setting change can do it.

I apologize that you think the DLL hack for true VGA is a pain. I guess it wold be nice if it was a built in setting; however, keep in mind that most people don't want true VGA. It is a minor hadnful that do and for most of them the DLL change is something very minor.

COntacts do sync so there is a setting issue there. Not sure what it could be without more details on what errors you are getting. Activesync can sometimes be problematic jsut as any other piece of software can.

I read somewhere that MS eventually plans to bring Wi-Fi Sync-ing back to WM5 - but that is probably an SE "upgrade" at a later time - but for now, it's off the table due to the potential security issues (which sounds logical to me).

As someone who cut his teeth into the PDA world with a Palm pilot, I can certainly say that Palm is a lot more "intuitive" to use, and the learning curve for PPC is much steeper (and with WM5, somewhat less forgiving).

Despite the complexities of the OS, I beleive that the greatest strengths of the platform are:
1) Greater Headroom - PocketPCs usually have a lot beefier CPUs and memory, allowing it to potentially run more demanding applications (as long as Microsoft doesn't bloat the OS and use it all up! :) )
2) Greater Flexibility - The OS is very much designed to be used for a multi-tasking environment - so you can run your Media Player while you remote control a server via Wi-Fi.

The downside to all this is the inevitable complexity of the system. As you can see from these threads, bugs do pop up a lot more frequently - and it may take twice as long to get a PocketPC working the way you want it compared to a Palm Pilot.

I use it for Multimedia, Word Processing, Personal Information Management, Gaming and eventually, GPS - something a laptop should be able to do. This is why I use this platform.

Why the Dell Axim? The x51v has twice the ROM as the best HP PDA, is just as fast, twice as affordable, and certainly upgradeable (Dell has a better policy on upgrading their PCs to the next OS, unlike HP - and I believe that this policy probably might apply to their PDAs as well).

If you don't miss the multimedia, and flexibility, then the Palm is for you. But if you want the flexibility and power the PocketPC platform brings, then the potential migration and learning pains are well worth it.

Is this a reply to my question about permanently turning off Bluetooth? If so, how does this USB BT adapter help me disable BT?

Thanks for the help,

Sandra

Sandra start a new thread with your problem. Your asking on someone elses thread. Thanks. :)

French the Axim X51v has loads of options. Thats what drove me to get one.
(1)Replacable Batteries
(2)CF and SD add ons galore(potential)
(3)Very good multimedia capabilities(movies and games)
(4)Software developers pushing for development of really good WM5 apps.
(5)And is has a gorgeous VGA screen to boot.

If you use software like Pocket Informant and can live without Wifi Sycnhing then the x51v is quite an impressive machine.:)

Im sure not in the far future we'll have a good bluetooth stack and a much stabler OS without tweaks. :approve: (well at least I hope :) )

I never, never, ever use Bluetooth. Is there some way I can permanently disable or remove it. I've tried removing the Bluetooth link in the Startup folder, but as soon as I close the folder, it regenerates. What is it? A cancer?

Sorry to hear that. I would say either there is something wrong during the upgrade or you have installed software that are not wm5 compatible. I have A06 on my x51v and I have never had to do a hard reset. I only do soft reset occassionally due to Magic Button bug. Did you follow the upgrade process word by word? Also, please list your programs that you have installed.

In the simple matter of Palm versus PocketPC, that's a matter of comfort level and personal taste. Since the Axim "feels" like every PC I use, I find it much easier to deal with and understand a PocketPC. I've had freezes and soft resets, just like my computer.

I've had a few Palms, but since that's the only environment I've ever had to deal with that particualr OS, my mind decided it was easier to stick with what I'm comfortable with. Plus, the Axim X51v is one powerful PDA. I don't push mine to the limit. I use it as a PIM (w/Agenda Fusion and PocketBreeze), games, and watching movies/music videos. I occassionally browse the internet while in bed (easier than taking my Inspiron 600 to bed with me), and instant message with my kids.

I've had many blips and burbs with Activesync, but overall it's synced my PDA's with my work and home computer. I've learned how to "fix" things, and have the patience to research when things don't go right.

I understand the mentality of paying good money and wanting things to work 100% without issue, but in the world of computers and electronics, problems and conflicts occur. At the end of the day, you need to decide for yourself if its all worth it. To me, I like to avoid like the plague the use of pencil and paper. I've been quite satisfied with my X5 Advanced, and I love my new X51v.
