With the price so low I am considering moving to an x51v from my x30high. My primary use is web browsing at my favorite brewery/bar (beer and wifi, what more can one ask?) but I do other things as well.. calender and the occasional game, native and emulated. I have some questions on the state of the x51v relative to the x30.
1) GAPI - has the gapi sluggishness been resolved at all? Does Morphgear run at a speed I am accustomed on my x30?
2) DPAD - Is the DPAD better then the horrid stiff pad on my x30?
3) Web Browsing - how does browsing compare to the x30 in terms of speed.. I presume it will look better.. but does it actually work better or at least as well?
4) My big question.. Is 624 Mhz enough? I am accustomed to using a QVGA PPC running at that speed.. I have concerns about the performance of this unit when pushing 4x as many pixels.. I am not concerned about the file read speeds. I understand that WM5 is different in that regard.
I am debating getting one now for $324 or waiting for, presumably, a new model with a faster processor.
324 is a good price. im not sure about tha gapi, the dpad seems pretty good it is kind of small. but ive played with a x30 for a while and never really had a problem with it. Web Browsing is pretty good even in PIE, and even better in Minimo or Opera.
I had a chance to fool around with some of the PPCs at Staples and the dpads were so much more comfortable and responsive.. more like operating a thumbstick on a paddle.. I always found it awkward to use on my x30..
Currently I use PIE when I can, and use minimo when PIE won't run the page properly. Performance of minimo, especially scrolling, is lacking but its richer in feature set. I am looking forward to trying opera.. thanks for reminding me.. I will install it today to try out tonight at the brewery..
One thing to keep in mind is that the x30h is one of the best PocketPCs ever made. It is lightning fast and works flawlessly for the most part.
Going to an x51v is going to have cons. It is not going to be as fast, especially with the overall system response (clicking through menus, launching programs, etc.). The wireless range is not as good, and the bluetooth support is definately inferior. That having been said, the x51v is still a great device and you will be very happy with it as long as you have realistic expectations.

I tried Opera the other night. It works well, but it doesnt do as good a job formatting the web sites I like to visit for one column as PIE does. Still, its good to have another browser to throw at websites that PIE doesn't handle.
I decided to wait to upgrade my PDA. I really think that I would prefer a model with a faster processor before I quadruple my pixel count with VGA. Hopefully that will be coming along soon.
i went from X30high to X51v. if you're thinking of using emulators, you'll have to wait until either the emulators start using openGL or something, or some kind of GAPI tweak becomes available for X51v... at the moment, i get only 34FPS on sega master system in MorphGear... on my X30 it was always 60/60. SNES is a fair bit slower too, except on the experimental openGL version of PocketSNES... that works fine.
overall performance is usable but noticably sluggish... basically the main feature in this update is the move to a VGA screen with 3d accelleration for those apps that use it, plus a CompactFlash slot... other than that, everything else is a step backward.
