I just purchased the axim x51v - So many questions!
Ok, first and foremost, let me say that I am very excited about this purchase. With the discount at dell and coupons, I managed to get this puppy for $289 before tax. Anyway, here are some of my many questions:
(Please keep in my mind this is my first ever PDA, and so I am extremely ignorant in all of this!!)
1. What general information do I need to know in order to make my life easier? (i.e. what are some known bugs and ways to fix them? I read the CF/SD/batter/standby/activesync problem already)
2. Can I simply put mp3s and mpgs on any old CF card, plug it into my PDA, and listen to music/watch movies?
3. What are some recommended programs that most users enjoy? Are most programs free or are most pay? If pay, where do most people purchase their software? I am particularly interested in some fun games and a quicken like finance software.
1. Read the stickies and you'll find plenty of infos. Though, don't worry about the problems just yet since not all x51v owners have them. Also, many problems are caused by softwares that's not compatible with WM5. Be careful about what you install!!!!
2. I believe WMP 10 (built in) plays mp3 and mpgs. However, try TCPMP, a VERY POWERFUL free media player. Much better than WMP despite the interface.
3. There are TONS of freeware for PPC, PPCFreewareand FreewarePPC are the best site for freewares. But again, be careful about what you install!! Not all applications are compatible with WM5 and they might screw up your Axim. Always perform backups periodically. BTW, ignore the certificate warning when you install applications.
Check out PocketGear and Handango , the biggest online PPC software store, for commercial softwares. BTW, I think there is a finance software called Pocket Quickens.

1. Do the ActiveSync Fix and disable Error Reporting.
2. Pretty much. I recomend TCPMP for playing movies, I use it to watch DivX/XviD TV shows and DVD rips. I just use Windows Media Player for MP3's.
3. There are a ton of free programs, but I've found that most of the ones you want or need you have to pay for. I'm still a new Axim owner and am experimenting with a lot of the trials to see what I like. I plan on purchasing Pocket Informant and SBSH iLauncher. You can get Adobe Acrobat Reader for free from Adobe, which is a must in my opinion.
Sorry for vague answers, I'm still learning too. I've had my Axim for 2 weeks, but have been so busy, I haven't been able to get things all settled with it.

I am pretty new to axims too but what i have found is that if there is a software program that you want they are generally pretty cheap and there is probably a freeware version that does the same thing but may not look as good. As for the quicken stuff i have never used that particular program but i am using microsoft money on my axim i got it from microsofts website it was free. Good luck.

If you would like to use your X51v as a digital photoviewer, there is full version of Resco Photo Viewer on the CD that came with your device (navigate to \EXTRAS\DEVICE\PhotoViewer folder and install RescoPicView_DellFull.exe using ActiveSync)
There are also full versions two games on the same CD: Toy Golf and Georally Racing but I am not sure how good they are.
As mentioned earlier you can find very useful freeware like TCPMP.
If you are looking for commercialware most people purchase from Handango or PocketGear. I would wait for a good deal or a coupon though.
That is the Dell Axim x51V for $324. I then used ebay to find a $35 off $300 or more coupon code (it cost me 1.98 after buy it now) and they emailed me a code within 1-3 minutes of purchasing. I entered the code, $35 was taken off, and voila, $289! After tax it came to around $310 or so
When I bought mine Axim X50V I went out and purchased this book, I found it to be every thing I needed to know and was well worht the money spent. How To Do Everything With Your Pocket PC, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
