Ok here is the rundown.
I've only ever used MagicButton for closing apps, then I switched to Vbar, so I can speak to the issue of a fair comparision. I'm running an x51v with WM5 A06.
MagicButton:
Pro's:
-Had a nice "taskbar" option that showed open programs in the top bar of the Axim display.
-It's free.
Con's:
-Laggy (Didnt notice it was at all till I installed Vbar).
-It sometimes would freeze my axim up causing me to do soft resets (Especially when changing wifi/internet settings).
-Sometimes it would just plain disappear/stop running.
-Sometimes would interfere with alerts and notifications.
Vbar:
Pro's:
-Extremely quick and a VERY small memory footprint (21k if I remember right).
-Has a great little battery and memory indicator that sits right next to the X button (and it seems to display correct information without any battery drain).
-Has not caused any system lock ups (yet). It's free!
Con's:
-Doesn't have the "taskbar" showing active programs, but you can access active programs via a drop down box from the X button.
-I can't seem to change the background color of the X button area even though I have tried every option available (I'm running a custom skin and Im pretty sure this is the conflict. I had the same conflict with Magicbutton). It should be noted that Vbar does offer the options of changing the background color.
As far as I'm concerned I'm going to stick with Vbar. It's quick, cheap (free), and feature packed.
You can get

You can get
MagicButton here:

They're both free. Try em' out for yourself and decide.
(As a side note I found a
sometimes fix for the Magicbutton freezing my axim screen. I would switch from Vertical to Landscape display mode, then back and then Magicbutton would let me close app.)
