Cool Axim x50v: From Heaven to Hell and back again...

I have been a proud Axim x50v owner since Nov. 2004. I've used/demoed almost every pocket pc program available and I have explored almost every possible use for my Axim. Moreover, I have been through all of the initial rom upgrades and I have persevered past almost all of the major problems. That is, until I made the upgrade to WM2005. When I made the upgrade back in Nov. I thought I could make it past the first round of bugs in hope of a rom update that would fix the majority of issues. Well, as most X50 owners know, any hope for a stable WM2005 is futile and a waste of time. With all of the memory leaks, sd/cf cards disappearing, bluetooth malfunctions, B/WSOD's, and 80% load problems I thought that a rom update would be an immediate priority for Dell. Guess not. I let my Axim sit practically dormant for over 3 months in anticipation for an update, collecting dust. Finally, I got the 80% load error and luckily was able to perform the SD card flash. Being sick of the BS, I flashed back to 2003se and I must say that I have not been happier since I first received my Axim over a year ago. In fact, I am once again ecstatic over my Axim. My x50v depression is CURED! Take my advice, all of you x50v owners that have made the unfortunate upgrade to WM2005 need to just accept the fact that having a functioning WM2005 on your x50v is a faint hope. Revert back now and celebrate one of the finest PDAs ever made...before this WM2005 mess.

Way to go! This should be the standard for all x50 users. I was thinking of getting the upgrade in december. As soon as i went to this site, i noticed it is a bad thing to do. These wm2005 upgrades have given the x50s a bad name.

I'm sure the update will be coming out soon though... Several people already reported that Dell told them the update will be released around Feb. 6. Anyway, I belive that it takes Dell similar amount of time for the patches when they released WM2003 upgrade for x5. After all, they can't ignore bunch of angry WM5 x50v owners here forever. They wouldn't want bunch of mobs raiding their HQ.

These "supposed" dates were the very same reason for me keeping WM2005 on my Axim for so long. At first a patch was supposed to be released in mid December, then late December, then January, etc. It seems to be nothing more than hearsay and conjecture that somehow spreads through these forums like a wildfire. As far as a genuine release date for the x50v, how about a "mid never." Especially if these "x51v: Dell's last PDA" rumors are true.

Well if they model the x50v after the x51v ROM ... it'll be smokin. I got my x51v today, have it loaded up with 15-16 apps and so far it seems happy. (I did the recommended activesync hack and disabled error notification). IE frickin flys compared to IE on 2003se.

Excuse me while I go knock on fake wood just in case.

I have my x50v just sitting waiting. 21 Days should be enough time for me to decide!

If that's true why then did the X51V fail miserably with SPB benchmarks when compared to the X50V. And wait till you find out about the crippled bluetooth stack.

SPB benchmarks is NOT updated to support Windows Mobile 5. A lot of stuff tested isn't really accurate. Even though flash is slower, it doesn't make that much difference in reality. I'm not sure, but I think wm5 buffers lots of stuff to RAM first to compensate speed.

I said almost exactly the same thing when I (upgraded) from WM5 back to 2003se. :approve:

You're right. My x51v cooks! Since A06 a month ago, zero problems with it.

Very happy camper!

Not all of us use bluetooth, but I for one am very happy with my x51v. As for benchmarks, who cares? It's a tool, which I use for personal as well as business. If it does what I need it to do, then I'm happy.

SPB benchmarks (1.6) IS updated to support WM5, it just isn't revised to provide accurate results on WM5. No one said these tests are accurate, but no matter how inaccurate these tests may be it shouldn't be this lopsided. If flash is slower, how will it NOT make much of a difference? How can read and writes to the ROM at least equal that of the RAM? If I can recall, it is just the opinion one reviewer named Adama D Brown who beleives that this doesn't make a difference as opposed to the opinion of a few other reviewers. Buffering to the RAM, if your theory is correct, will in itself cause a slowdown in performance simply because the CPU has one more task to perform.
This was taken from SPB benchmark 1.6

Well, not all people are like you. There are people here who want to get some quality for what they paid for, and that includes bluetooth and performance. Who cares about benchmark? A lot of people do, otherwise they would not bother making a program for that, would they? User satisfaction depends on how they use their units. If you are happy with how you use it, good for you.
