Dell Axim X51v - My Suggestion For Setting This Device.
Greetings to all,
I purchase the Dell Axim X51v during Xmas-2005 as a present
for myself. I review the Axim Site and notice that there are
several issues related to the Dell Axim X51v goes to sleep and
never wake up!, Blank white screen, Battery run down, soft
reset, remove the battery to resolve these issues, etc.
Well, since I got my Axim X51v, I "never" encounter any of
these issues, mainly I think because of my setup of this device.
Following is my hardware listing:
(1) 1GB Compactflash (Installed all the time and used for storage
of softwares and games).
(2) 2GB Secure Digital (Installed all the time and used for
storage of Pictures and Movies).
How I setup my Dell Axim:
(1) I always trying to keep all things up-to-date, so I updated
my ROM to the newest A06 Rom Rev.
(2) Because of residence ROM and RAM that built into the Axim
X51v are small and very valuable to keep things going.
So I always go to the Setup, Memory section and "Stop" all
the "Running" program that I not currently used.
(3) I setup the Power button to shut-off the Axim once I pressed
and hold this button. Just a reminder, the power button, by
default setup at the factory, once you press it briefly, it
will put the Axim into sleep mode (Not full power off), and
if you press and hold it, you will increase or decrease the
brightness of the screen.
Since I can use the supplied Battery Lite software that
came with the CD, I can always adjust the brightness whenever
I desired, I do not need the default setup of the "Press and
Hold" power button. However, I really need the ability to
turn-off power completely.
So, whenever I finished playing with my Axim toy, I go and stop
all the running program, then press and hold the power button
and cofirm OK on the popup screen, and that is it!.
As you may have noticed there are several solutions that will fix the problems you are referring to!
However regarding your setup here are some suggestion and thoughts:
(1) Great!
(2) Try Magic Button (it will save you some steps, closing programs!)
(3) One of the main uses of a PPC for most people is its PIM functionality and I believe adding a minute plus of boot time is not really an option; the sleep mode is actually not a bad thing since it will give you, almost instantaneous access to your data!

I think a critical point you missed was the application of the 'fake server' trick if you intend to use CF/SD cards. This trick also stopped any battery drain when my unit was off. This trick also stopped any 'Does Not Turn On' issues. IMHO the application of this trick is the primary reason my unit is rock solid at this time.

The all important Solution
This 'server trick' was discovered by another Aximsite forum member known as Invid a little while ago. This information is courtesy of him originally, and copied many times throughout the Aximsite forum, but I am re-writing in easy to follow laymans terms to hopefully make this a sticky, and stop the multiple posting regarding the same old problems. Here we go!
1. Turn on your Axim
2. Go to Start > Programs > Activesync. This will open the Activesync program.
3. Tap Menu at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. This will bring up the Options Menu. Notice the option Schedule... is greyed out? This is the all-critical option we need to get access to. But as it's disabled we can't change Activesync's default synchronisation schedule.
Ok, so how do we enable the Schedule option? Easy!!! Fool Activesync into thinking there is an Exchange Server to sync with:
1. From Activesync's Menu tap on Add Server Source.
2. In the following screens you can enter any old garbage. It does not matter, but just in case your unsure, just type the following in the indicated boxes:
Server Address: fake
Tap Next
User name: fake
Password: fake
Domain: fake
(Ticking save password or going into the Advanced menu makes no difference, so no need to bother).
Tap Next
Untick all of the 'Data you want to synchronise' options
Tap Finish
3. Ok, we're done creating the server. You should now see in Activesync's main screen your normal Activesync connection(s), and a new connection called Exchange Server.
4. Go back into the Menu, and lo and behold the Schedule option is now enabled! Go ahead and tap it!
5. You will see that both options in the Schedule screen are set to Every 5 Minutes (A01 Rom), or Every 10 Minutes (A06 Rom). This simply will not do! ( * Advanced users - please see my note below * )
6. Using the drop downs, change both the Peak times and Off-peak times boxes to Manually.
7. Press the OK button at the top right of the screen.
Congratulations! Activesync is now gagged from opening on it's own and ruining your life! Your work is not done just yet though - time to clean up and get rid of the now unwanted fake Exchange Server.
1. Go back into Activesync's Menu, then Tap Options.
2. Highlight Exchange Server, then tap Delete. A warning message will appear about removing files etc, but as you have no files associated with the fake Exchange Server, it's nothing to worry about - just tap Ok.
3. The list will now only show your remaining PC Sync connection(s). Obviously do not delete these!
So there you go, your Axim will now be happy to lead a normal and fulfilling life serving your organisational needs.
You may now put your Axim on Standby safe in the knowledge it will turn back on when you need it to. You can be sure that your CF and SD cards are no longer going to go walkabout. You can be safe in the knowledge that your battery should no longer lose it's charge. Etc etc.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I thank you.
Forum Admin - PLEASE MAKE THIS STICKY!!! :approve:

I did the same 'fake server" trick and all the problem issues are gone.
No I did not miss the Fake Server trick!
Just did not want to go thru all the troubles of trying
The Fake Server methodology!
All I wanted is something similar to Start>Shutdown feature
in Windows-XP. I just wanted to "For Sure" shutdown completely
and preserve the battery juice, especially when I travel.
Does this trick work for both the X50v AND the X51v?
Yes, the trick works on both the X50 and X51... It does fix reponsiveness issues - now if I could just get ActiveSync to quit when I take it out of the cradle - any ideas?
Ok just a note to look at. I have a 624Mhz 51v ROM A01 (as reported in "System Information". You said that the default times (Peak and Off Peak) were 5 min for ROM A01 and 10min for A06. This isn't 100% accurate. Mine came up with 10 min with the A01 ROM. Thats all.

Delete the partner ship on the PPC
Open Active sync on the PC
On the PC set active sync to use Com port under file/connection
Open Active sync on the PPC
goto connect bluetooth on PPC
Select yes to create a new partnership
Setup the partner ship with the computer
Now it will have either Active sync or Com port under avlible services.if it says comport select it then press refresh. it should now say Active Sync.
Select Active sync and hit finish
goback to Active sync on the PPC and hit connect Via Bluetoth again.
It should not connect and Sync properly
If it does not send me a PM there are a few more tricks to try.
Also a softreset after you remove the partnership can;t hurt.

After following all your stemps I am still not able to connect.
I am promted for a passs key on my X51v- which I entered 1234 then it hangs up
and My desktop pc tells me that active sync fails to connect because of incorrect set up
or my device is not a pocket pc or smart phone.
