bunch of Newbie questions - re. vga, speed, apps, etc.
After countless hours of reading posts on Aximsite I still have some newbie questions using my X51v:
1. VGA - How do you turn on or off this feature? Should it be turned on all the time?
2. Processor Speed - At what speed do you recommend leaving it at all the time (Max, Normal, Power-Saving, Auto)?
3. Is the Axim Self Diagnostic app of any use? Install or not?
4. Apps & files - Which should be installed/stored on the unit memory and which on a card (SD or microdrive)? Do the apps need to be on in the unit for speed optimization?
5. Are there any apps (included with unit or commercial) that are known to slow down system? Conflicts with other apps?
6. When installing and deleting apps - are there left-over files that reside even after deletion (that can possible take up space or slow down system)? If so, how do you get rid of those left-over files? What's the best way to keep the unit "clean"?

That's all I can think of for now.
1) You can't turn it off.
2) Auto, unless you want to save power, then power saving.
3) Self diagnostic app? No idea what you're talking about.
4) I put apps on the device, files on cards. That way the apps are always available, and the large file sizes of movies/mp3's etc don't fill up the internal storage. Running off storage cards is faster, but it's more just preference really.
4) As said before where you install is personal preference, I install largish games and things I don't care about on the storage card. It's mainly a matter of if you have 2 SD or 2 CF cards and you need the app on one card and a file on the other of the same type card....
5) Check the WM5 compatability sticky at the top of the Windows Mobile 5 forum for compatability.
6. When installing and deleting apps - are there left-over files that reside even after deletion (that can possible take up space or slow down system)? If so, how do you get rid of those left-over files? What's the best way to keep the unit "clean"?
6) Use the 'Remove Programs' feature in Settings to remove apps. Then check the /Program Files folder for any residual files left behind. Example - if you were uninstalling Adobe Acrobat, check /Program Files for the presence of a folder called 'Adobe' and then delete it using File Explorer. You might also want to periodically clear your cache in Pocket Internet Explorer - if you do a lot of web browsing this can fill up your device quick.
1. VGA can refer to two things (sort of). Firstly, it refers to your screen resolution (640x480, i think). Your x51v has a high resolution screen... this is what the above poster was talking about 'not able to turn off'. The second thing that people talk about (that CAN be turned on and off) is True VGA mode. Basically, while your x51v comes w/ a VGA screen, it doesn't truly function in true VGA mode. If you want to swith to true VGA, do a search on this site for OzVGA and follow the recommendations. I, personally, don't like TrueVGA mode. It makes things much smaller... it would be nice for websurfing because your screen wouuld display more of a page.. but I don't websurf that much.
2. I go with Auto unless I'm on a long trip ot something and need power saving.
3. Who needs a flaky self-diagnostic app when you've got AximSite? I ignore this program.
4. I've installed my 'core' apps to my device... there is plenty of room, so why not? I do have a few programs, like a game emulator and a pocket bible reader installed on a card where I keep the data files for those programs. But, for the most part, I install to the device.
5. The only app that I've seen that does slow the machine down some is WisBar Advance 2. However, I still use it because I like the functionality and aesthetics that it creates.
6. Yes, I have seen cases where using the 'Remove Programs' dialogue didn't get rid of everything. I went in with File Explorer and nuked the rest of the files by hand... but, this might still leave some registry changes un-removed.
With, number 6 in mind, here is my piece of advice for you as a new Axim owner. I only got my x51v about a month ago. I went NUTS. I installed everything I could get my hands on... tweaked and played... uninstalled, reinstalled.. just crazy. I finally settled down on a configuration, but my machine was running a little flaky. So, I made a note of everything I wanted to keep and performed a hard reset. Then I went back and reinstalled only the things that I knew I'd use. The fresh OS w/o the history of the crazy install/uninstall/reinstall that I did at the beginning is MUCH more stable and faster. I would suggest that you do a hard reset once you've found a configuration you like.

THIS IS WHAT I INTENDED ON DOING. THX.
When you say "make a list" what are you talking about? I think I need to do a hard reset as well after installing/reinstalling a bunch of stuff. Will it delete things like Wisbaradvance 2, pocketbreeze etc..? I don't know how to back up stuff.

Yes, a hard reset will delete anything that you have installed to the device. If you installed a program to a card, it would survive the reset. Otherwise, it goes POOF. (FWIW, I took my CF card out of my Axim during the reset. It made me nervous to leave 4 gigs of mp3s available to an operating system that was in 'RESET EVERYTHING' mode. I don't know if it would have erased the card, but I didn't want to find out!)
AFAIK, there is no way to truly back up programs that you have installed. You will have to re-run the installation program after you perform the hard reset.
What I meant by make a list was go to settings-->system-->remove programs. There you will find a list of every program that you have installed. Make a note of these. The way I did mine was to create a new folder on my desktop and then go to the internet and download the installation program for each piece of software that I wanted to keep. I put each of the install routines in that folder so I had them all in one location. That should cover you as far as applications are concerned and it will help minimize downtime. These install files might still be on your desktop somewhere, or you might just have to download them again. It depends on where you saved them the first time around and what you did with them afterwards.
Now, what that DOESN'T cover are little tweaks and utilities that you might have set up. For instance, I use the softkeys.cpl applet. That will not be listed with your installed programs. So, you need to spend a little time thinking about small changes like that that you have made and go ahead and download the files required to make those changes again.
Once you've got everything together in once place, you can perform the hard reset and re-install everything surprisingly quickly. I think I went from bogged down, over-installed crapfest Axim to freshly hard-reset and re-installed Axim in about an hour. Good luck!

2. Processor Speed
3. Is the Axim Self Diagnostic app of any use?
5. Are there any apps (included with unit or commercial) that are known to slow down system? Conflicts with other apps?
Hey Leepark,
welcome...
2. I've not found a real use for anything other than auto. Even intensive applications step up speed quickly enough.
3. I've run this one for fun a couple of times, but I haven't found a use for it at all.
5. Big applications that access data frequently (Epocrates for example) seem to run faster when installed to the main memory rather than an SD or CF card.
Two other major points that have made my life easier (which you've probably already run across) are the "fake server trick" and disabling the Power Save Mode on the WLAN utility.
