To Upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0 or not to Upgrade

Hi,

Due to some syncing issues I am going to have to do a hard re-set on my X50V. I was thinking about using the upgrade disk to Windows Mobile 5.0 right after the hard reset. Would this be a good time to upgrade? Will all of my apps used on the 2003 OS work with 5.0?

Thanks

Joe

I wouldn't. None of your apps are going to run better. Unless there's something you want to use that's exclusively in WM5, stick with the solid OS

Upgrading the X50v to WM5 can lead to some serious headaches - as you'll see by the very mixed reports on people trying to "fix" the issues with the upgrade.

My recommendation would be to stick to WM2003SE and wait until DELL release a ROM update for the X50v upgrade.

Also, carefull with 2003 apps on WM5, they can cause the dvice to overheat (battery managers) or just crassh (today plugins) or in some cases just plain don't work - however, wait a bit and more and more of the current software publishers will upgrade their software to WM5 compatability...

If you see my s-l-o-w posting below.

I only just got my Dell Axim yesterday and was so fed up with the speed and issues it had, I have just in the last hour put it back to 2003.

Oh what joy. Not much has changed (you're not missing much at all) but so many things have got better and the whole machine is running 2 to 3x the speed.

I have actually tried WM5 twice on my x50v. Both times it was horrible:

- several soft resets a day due to lockups.
- horribly slow

Thus I have downgraded twice. WM5 is just not worth it yet...and I am not really convinced it will ever be.

My 2 cents.

I'm battling on with WM5. I've applied the hacks and the Amix is much more responsive now. The bluetooth stack sucks badly but thats my only major grip with it.

I have WM5 in an unopened package and plan on leaving it that way after the posts I have read in here about all the trouble it causes.
