x51v maintenance and backup ?'s

Does the axim require any maintenace like the desktop version of windows does? Such as defragmentation, registry cleaning, or general file cleanup? I know it has the program un-install feature, but I would like to know I'm doing everything I can to keep it running as fast and smooth as possible. Is it necessary and if so what do you guys use?

Also, I've been thinking about getting Sprite to do backups with. How is that different than the back up software that is included? Also, what types of things get backed up? - only contacts, calendars, tasks, and other stored files or do all the internal settings in the axim get backed up as well? - like my gprs settings and such. It seems if the only thing getting backed up is my outlook information and the occasional word or excel file that I have on the device then I may not need to do backups?

Any thoughts?

Thank you,
Shannon

I've never seen a defragmentation program for the Axim, and I doubt you would ever need one. Granted, memory does get fragmented - like a hard disk, but the effects of such fragmentation is so minute - it's inconsequential.

If you do insist in wasting your time in defraggin your flash card, you can always plug it into your PC cardslot and defrag it - though the performance gain is again, nothing noticeable.

Most Windows experts "Nuke" their systems every year - that is because the loading and unloading of software over time leaves behind too many registry and stray DLLs - which sap performance. So, if you load and unload a lot of apps on your PDA, you may want to perform a Factory reset once a year or two.

Backups are pointless in my opinion. If you sync your PDA to outlook, you should just back that up - since that is the really valuable data you want to preserve. Apps can be easily backed up. The Dell backup utility is good enough for me.

One good backup strategy is to load your Facotry default Axim with the apps you are sure to use, and then back it up. That will be your restore point for the future - this will save you time later down the road - assuming the apps don't change.

I agree to a certain point. Basic maintenance does not include a defrag or anything like that. Memmaid is a great little application to handle cleaning up temporary file, old registry entries, etc... so look into that one.

As for backup... I use Sprite right now, but I'm also considering Spb backup (due out next week). It is more complete that the default backup, and allows a complete restore (including applications) from hard reset in minutes as opposed to hours of reinstalls. Remember the BIS does not survive a hard reset on the x51v...

To keep windows clean, you usually have to do a os reinstall and harddrive reformat. This can take a whole day. On a pocket pc to do the same, all you have to do is delete all the data from the bis and hard reset.
