X51v start up lag - why? which apps are causing this?
How long does it take for your unit to start up once you press the power button? Does it take a while until everything on your Today page loads (eg, weather, add-ons, etc.)? I don't know what the standard is but my X51v seems to take a while for everything to load to the point where I can scroll down, open apps, etc.
Which apps are notorious for slowing down the unit?
BTW, I'm running Pocket Informant, and a bunch of trial apps (wisbar, memmaid, resco explorer, spb finance, weather panel, city time, 1-calc, eWallet, etc).

Battery monitors and Today page add ins are notorious for this. try it without and load one at a time until you figure out which one it is. only program switcher i have found that is acceptable is Magic Button. the others caused a lot of problems like you describe on my pda. Anything with a battery monitor in it seems to make the battery drain issue worse too. Also, if you have ever started Odyssey to see what it was or actually use it, you need to exit from it before you shut down. It will cause a big lag when startig too.

If you leave bluetooth or WiFi on when you shut off your Axim, it will cause some lag too.

On my X51v, I found that turning the unit off with WLAN or Bluetooth enabled causes approximately 14 second freeze when I turn it back on from sleep mode. When it turns on, the screen redraws immediately as expected, but if I then press something like the start button, it freezes for about 14 seconds before it responds. I have to make sure I turn WLAN/BT off with the side button before I turn the unit off.
