It's probably because Cisco bundles a large number of VPN-client licenses with their VPN-gateway. So it is already paid for. There is a slight possibility that you could get the WM5 VPN-client to work, the one which comes preinstalled. This depends of the configuration of the gateway, if it is 'simple' enough you can make it work.

Need help with VPN on Axim X5 connecting to Cisco Host
k my wife uses a cisco VPN program on her laptop to connect to her work computer and remotely control it, check her email etc. I am trying to set my X5 up so that she can do the same thing from it. I have found a few VPN programs for pocket pc and have plugged in the same info I used on the laptop software, IP, group name, username password etc but not having much success. can anyone help me out here?

she has to login securly to the host ip using the software and then clicks on remote desktop connection which is under start/programs/accessories/communications and then enters the ip for her computer.

I spoke to the techs and they say that I need to use a vpn client that supports IPsec/UDP I see the one in WM2003 does IPsec/L2TP. I also dont know how I would emulate the remote desktop connect that she has to do also after she logs in using vpn client. any help you techies out there?

I have tried every VPN client I can find and cannot get connected to the host for nothing. the cisco client on the laptop does it in like 5 secs ARGH!

if anyone can help me I would appreciate it I need to get this working asap. I can type up the info that I put into the cisco client (not showing all the passwords etc if that would help.. It just get to the sharing keys section and then says did not receive response

First you need to find a VPN program that is compatable with the X5. The old Movian VPN was if you can still find it. Some of the new BlueFire, anthasoft, NCPSecure or Apani maybe have a compatable version. I have use most of these and have connected then to a Cisco 3000 vpn. As for controlling the work desktop that is a different issue. Just set up the correct IP address, user name and password and select 3-DES and MD5 along with Group 2. That should do it.

i have been trying with MovianVPN and have put in all the same info we put in on the cisco client on the laptop but this is what the IKE status says:

Generating key....
Exchanging Keys, Please wait...
Failed to receive reply!

I tried to import the .pcf file from the cisco vpn client into movian but it asks for a identity file password which i have no idea what that is

Which operating system are you running? If you are running Windows Mobile 2003 you could still use Bluefire VPN. Are you using Handheld PC 2000 or PocketPC 2002 (probably the case) you could use NCP Secure Entry client:

http://www.ncp.de/english/services/t...dex_entry.html

By the way, the built-in client will not let you connect, so if you can't make Movian working, try one of the above. It will most probably be possible for you to connect, but it takes time to make it work! (Unless you are lucky) Don't expect to get it to work after less than 15 tries with different settings, and you could need more. You should read what Ollie wrote about the settings in NCP.

About using remote desktop: I use remote desktop over cisco VPN often from my x51v, but remote desktop was built-in to WM2005. I don't think that is the case on older operations systems like 2000 and 2002, but perhaps in 2003. I don't know, as this is my first ppc. If you just need to run tasks on your home-computer, there are other alternatives. But I don't know if any of them offers a graphical user-interface to the host computer.

Regards,
Thomas

Although not yet officially supported for the X50/X51, I downloaded Apani's VPN trial client and it was MUCH easier to get up and running on my X30 then NCP (haven't tried bluefire). I already had the VPN 3000 client on my desktop preinstalled by my company, I opened it up, looked at the settings, put them into the Apani software, and was connected. Just my 2 cents.

I've tried several clients and the Bluefire seemed to be the easiest to get working on an X51v. The only issue we had in our environment was not allowing Perfect Forward Secrecy on the concentrator. After I turned that on, authentication is always successful and ActiveSync works great. No issues I've seen yet with the Dell WLAN tools.

I also got Bluefire working on an Axim X5 that had been upgraded to Win CE 2003? I think the PocketPC OS was version 4.20.x.

After anthaVPN destroyed my Wifi forcing me to hard-reset and being non-successful with Bluefire I tried NCP Secure client. At first both ActiveSyc and Wifi no longer worked, but after entering those registry tweaks someone mentioned on the first page and a soft-reset these issues are no more. However, I'm still kinda clueless what settings I should choose in the configuration utility. The VPN FAQ of my university only has the confuguration for movian, but I don't kno how these translate into NCP Secure.

Policy-Name:
Client: Cisco Unified Client
Gateway Address: 134.109.140.240
Use Perfect Forward Secrecy: No
Use Extended Authentication: Yes
Group Name: tuc-internet
Group Password: (have both the ecrypted and unencrypted one)
User Name: [user name]
IKE: Group: GRP2_DH-1024
Cipher: 3DES_CBC
Hash: MD5
IPSec: ESPIP_AES128_SHA-96
DNS: Query DNS: Yes

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Colin

Under Basic Settings set the Profile name to "Any name you want"
Connection Type VPN connection to IPSec Gateway
Communication medium to LAN/WLAN unless you are using a modem then you will have to set up the modem connections. I had some problems setting up a modem and don't use that method any longer.

Line Management
I have connection mode at Manual
and timeout at 500

General settings
Gateway address is "134.109.140.240"
For IKE Policy I use automatic mode "You can also select advanced and go into the IKE and find Group2 DH_1024, You will also be able to set 3DES _CBC here I believe"
For IPSec policy "Again you can select advanced and edit it to AES128_SHA-96"
Advanced Options
Exch Mode I use Agressive Mode - that way it uses the group name and password
PFS Group - none

Identities
Local Idenity - Free String
ID would be "tuc-internet"
Use pre shared key Sheared secret - "your group password"

Use extended auth
User Name your "Collage user ID - what you use to login with when directly connected"
Password - I don't know what you use here - I have a password defined - you may have a password. If you have a password you can enter it here or leave it blank. Leaving it blank will cause the program to request it as you connect. Keeps others from using you connection if you lose the device. It could be just your collage password.
Use access data from configuration

IP address Assignmnet
Check the Use IKE Config Mode
I have IP address as 0.0.0.0 and the subnet mask 255.255.255.0
You would check the DNS/WINS servers box and the two DNS Server numbers

The next pages are blank and the Link Firewall page I have Enable Stateful Inspection as Always and checked Enable NetBIOS over IP

See if this works.

The other info you included is for setting up you Wireless card. That is done as part of the wireless setup. You should know that is working when you see the two arrows showing a WiFi connection at the top of your screen. If you don't have that working don't even try the NCP VPN because you have no connection.

I have not used NCP Secure in a few months and am doing this from memory and my instructions I copied from the first page of this thread. I curently use Bluefire with no problems.

Hope this helps.
Ollie

The screen shots are not very readable. From what I could make out from the screen shots they look correct. I no longer have NCP Secure installed on anything so I can't go back and check all the settings.

OK I had to manually edit the IKe and IPSEC policy to match the settings in the FAQ but now I am able to connect to the VPN. However, I still cannot access the internet from PocketInternet Explorer or Opera. Do I have to change something else?

In connections/Connections/Advanced/Select networks I have both of mine set to My work Network
Also under Connections/Connections/Proxy Settings I check this network connects to the internet. You may also need to check athe network uses a proxy and have to enter the proxy server name. When I connect on the road theough WiFi without enabling VPN I have no Proxy. When I connect to Work using WiFi and the VPN I have to use the proxy.
