Error message: "Unable to obtain a serrver assigned IP address..."

I receive this message whenver I sync:

"Pocket PC Networking
Unable to obtain a server assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in the Network settings."

Everything else is working fine: synching (on two different desktops), receiving e-mails over the web, wireless, etc.

Anyone know how I can keep this message from popping up every time I synch? It's more of a nuisance than a problem.

Thanks,
Jerry

I got that once, when I had changed settings incorrectly on a network protocol. I never could figure out what to change back, but I haven't seen it since after a hard reset for the last patch. Now, I'm very careful about what settings I change.

Anyway, I know this isn't the answer, but maybe it'll point you in the right direction...

Wow, it's amazing I found this post. My axim never did this, but now has started doing this over the last couple days. I can't remember changing anything, but maybe I did???

Mine started doing this immediately after I connected to a different wifi network.

Normally I use my home wifi or the cradle. I went to a relatives apartment, found a unsecure wifi, connected with no issue checked email and turned it off. Soon as I came home and put the x51v into the cradle the "IP Error" came up. Now everytime I put the x51v in the cradle I get the IP error.

This does "not" prevent me in anyway from browsing the net in either activesync or wifi, but it gets annoying.

Have it set to dhcp right now for wifi, going to change it to static and see if that clears it up :hide:

Hi guys,

I been having this problem for a while and narrowed it down to having "Remote-NDIS Host" in Network Cards set to "Use server-assigned IP address". All my other adapters use specific IP address. The problem is that if I set "Remote-NDIS Host" to a specific IP address my internet thru ActiveSync becomes extremely slow. I can't explain it at all.

Thanks Oleg! That stopped the error message coming up.

The "Remote-NDIS Host" setting is one of those annoying fields that once you've entered it, you can't get out of it without entering something. I erroneously set it to server-assigned IP address just so that I could get out.

"my internet thru ActiveSync becomes extremely slow"
Yikes I've a lot to learn (only had my Axim for 1 day). can you explain what you mean by "Internet through active sync"? I have the Internet working via wifi and through a Bluetooth connection to my Nokia 6230 (that was a mission).

Thanks

What is a "remote-NDIS host? What is its function? Does it matter what IP address we enter for the Remote-NDIS Host if we don't use it, whatever it is? Or is it essential to proper synching?

I just want us to understand what we may be sacrificing to eliminate this annoying error message.

That didn't work for me, unless I did something wrong. When I changed the Remote NDIS Host" setting to "use specific IP address" (I made up one) I am not able to perform a standard ActiveSync. I set it back to "user server-assigned IP addrss" and it performed the sync again.

Hi guys,

My ActiveSync connection is setup to be able to access the internet. Programs like PocketWeather, StockManager, various RSS readers, Avantgo etc use this connection to download when cradled. The problem is that once I enter an IP address this connections slows down for some reason.

Hi Jerry,

You can't just "make one up". You need to assign it an IP address that can be used on your network and is not assigned to any other device.

Well, ya learn something every day. I guess I was getting this confused with the need to "make up" an entry to address "the great disappearing CF card caper."

Now the next puzzle. Will this "specific" IP address solution work when two different computers are synched, which I do? Can the same IP addresses be established for two different computers?

I think I just answered my own questions. Here is what I experienced.

The IP address is apparently generated by the handheld, because the IP addresses after connection to each computer were identical via the "Use server-assigned IP address" setting.

However, when I set the Remote-NDIS Host to "Use specific IP address", and then entered the specific IP address, the handheld would not connect (sync), even after removing it from cradle or turning it on and off, etc.

Here is a key question: My x51v has the built in Dell Wireless Adapter. Why wouldn't I set the IP address in that adapter instead of through the Remote-NDIS Host?

Jerry

Thanks for your info; I take it that the supplied Internet Explorer can't do it?

Out of interest, what IP address have you used? I used the "Use specific IP address" and specified 169.254.2.1 and it all works perfectly. I don't know if it would cure the slow down problem that you mentioned, cos I haven't got Internet through Active Sync working yet... actually, I'm not sure why I'd need it :-)

This may not sound like a good "fix" - but, reseting it to factory default will clear out all of the entries - and error message.

Hi virge,

I take it that your computer is not connected to the internet all the time? Because if it is your PDA should be able to access internet using ActiveSync. Just make sure that in the ActiveSync -> File -> Connections Settings you have "This computer is connected to:" set to "The Internet".

I've tried to use the same IP address I assigned to my PDA for my Wi-Fi connection ie 10.0.0.51. I did notice that it tends to get 169.254.2.1 assigned when using "Use server-assigned IP address". You will also notice that in the network connections the network interface gets IP address of 169.254.2.2.

I've now tried 169.254.2.1 and it seems to be working much better.

Thanks for that.
