Worried Memory & Storage questions x51v

Hey. I have a couple of questions.

I may be totaly off base here, but I think I remember reading that the amount of stuff you have saved in the Storage Memory affects speed, because it's all the same RAM.

Am I crazy?

2nd question is on average, how much program memory is running at stand still on your machine? With only Wisebar Advance running, I've got 20 in use, and 29 free. Is this normal?

Thanks.

The only time it can affect the speed of the unit is when u install software that isnt WM5 compatible.

Dont worry about the amount of apps you install. The X50v has a great processor, and even if you lost speed, you would probably not see any difference at all.

OK I am ready to go elsewhare for a new brand of PDA.

I am very frustrated by my inability to have sufficent program memory to run my applications. I have Axim x50v running A01 operating system. I have a 1 Gig CF card and a 256MB SD card. I have all my programs except Pocket informant and epocrates ProRX installed on the SD card. Why does the memory settings say i have 44.56 MB allocated and 42.54 in use with 2.02 free, while the program memory says it has 17.19 MB allocated 13.68MB in use and 3.51MB free...yet there are no programs running except active sync ? When i switch to "built in storage" it says only 3.79MB are in use and 87.64 is free. What is eating up the memory? I have read through the excellent notes on Ram and Rom but I am still not getting what is happening. Is this a function of operating system A01 vs A03. It appears i should not upgrade to A05 as there are bugs in it.
Thanks for any clarification.

If this is truley a lack of Ram what other products out there have higher amounts of RAM memory and fast processors? I use my PDA all day long for my work in the medical field as resouce for information and drug forularies, texts, calculations etc. I need a pocket device that works well.

Are you using a task management program? Something that closes applications instead of "minimizing" them?

For example Magic Button (free) - http://www.trancreative.com/mb.aspx

If not, when you run an application, then click the "X" in the upper corner, it doesn't close the application, it just minimizes it, so therefore it still takes up RAM.

Honestly this is not a fault of Dell, HP or anyone else. It's a function of the operating system, and so you will not find a better solution with another vendor....

Thanks for the task bar manager but even with it installed it does not correct the problem of too little memory. I would manually close down the programs and I would still have the Storage memory almost completely using the system resources and the program memory similarly full. I am currently using the A01 operating system. I wonder if the installment of A04 would correct this issue. Yet from looking at other threads it appears there are major glitches with that upgrade and for A05.

I was looking at the HP iPaq hx2750 and it has 128 MGB of ram a similar fast processor and just as many storage options. It appears that might resolve my issues. I have been a Dell user since the early days of Axim, yet i need a reliable device that can run the different reference texts and formularies i neeed.

You must have installed all your apps to the default location, ie RAM. Uninstall all your apps and re-install them to BIS (ROM) or one of your storage cards. ROM is better if you switch out memory cards alot. You should have way more free memory.

If your centain nothing is installed in RAM. Backup and do a hard reset, update your Axim and start over installing your apps. I'm running A05 and I'm not having any problems. I haven't heard of any issues either.

Also if its a recent problem, check a see what you installed most recently. Maybe the program is running in the background and is glitching out.

hi, try using memmaid. it will help by moving ie cache folder to storage card. you can also move some dlls to storage card. if you install your programs, use rom or storage cards as your destination, even with today plugins. there is a sticky with a few tips on how to increase your free ram. by the way, when you move the ie cache folder, dont forget to use file explorer to clean out the ie cache folder in the windows directory.
