Looks like there are still lots of bugs after the change in the forum. Here I go again

Anyhow, I don't feel re-type my long review again so just want to point out some new enhancements I've noticed on my new axim x51v.

1st PDA:

I got my 1st pda about 2 weeks ago and absolutely loved it. It came with the latest rom and I've never encountered as many problems as those who bought the unit months back. Less than a week ago, the speaker on the PDA stopped working due to the "stuck" latch inside the earphone jack. I contacted dell and demanded overnight replacement.

2nd PDA:

I got the new unit the next day and did a backup from my previous unit. After couple hours of testing around and I've found some nice new improvements.

1. The battery is made in korea. (my 2 1100 mah were made in china) This battery goes down to 92% after 1 hour of listening mp3 with mortplayer where my previous one will go down to 88% with just 40 minutes of playing. I am not sure if there is a completely redesign in the battery or may be it's just because it's new?

2. The touch screen is not as smooth as my 1st unit. There is definitely more "friction". At first it felt like there is sand stuck on the tip of the stylus. I was afraid of scratching up the screen. After a while I find this "new" screen has higher precision and the handwriting feels so much more nicer. You can feel every single stroke you make. It kind feels like you have one of those screen protector on.

3. This is also related to the screen. It seems they've also "fixed" the "polarize" effect when watching video in the landscape mode. I can see the perfect clear pictures with rich color without tilting the pda at all. (except the reflection you get from overhead lighting)

All I can say is that I love the new one much more and just hoping they've also fixed the headphone problem in the later productions as well.

The effect of a shorter battery life is normal behaviour on a new Li-Ion battery. It should improve after the first few charges.

1. try recharging/discharging your battery several times to calibrate the battery charge meter.

While I had the problem I did a search and it seems this also happened to older v50, v51 units. Basically the latch inside the earphone jack gets stuck so it close the circuit and PDA will still "think" there is something plugged in and not playing sound from its speaker. You can only hear the sound by using headphone.
You can try fix this by plug in/out the headphone many times and try to pop the latch loose again. It worked for some people but failed in my case.

There is nothing wrong with battery made in china. As I mentioned, it's just a change I noticed in the new unit I received. It is a little bit different in the design (very subtle difference) and I've noticed overall better battery life from the new ones.

Again, I posted this just to show there is still some subtle improvements being made on the x51v PDAs.

I asked this earlier in the thread -- what hardware REV is your new x51v?

What does the number look like? above the service code it's the service tag #
nad there are 3 barcodes with a number listed under each one.

Oh, I don't have the number for the old once because it's already sent back to dell.

It is -VERY- unlikely that those differences exist in the Axim itself when they are the same rev. The screen 'polarization' in particular, that is next to impossible.

Maybe we can get some other info from users who have warranty returns.

BTW-- The increased friction on the screen of your new Axim is caused by the glue left over from the protector that it shipped with. The first time you clean the screen that will go away.
