SPB restore to a newer ROM? To do or not to do?
Hi,
I was wondering when in the future a new ROM comes out (say A07), what to do with backup programs like Sprite and in my case Spb. The ROM documentation always mentions it is wise to do a full re-install of everything because in a newer ROM registry entries or config files might have changed between ROM versions. But that is a real pain! If you look in my signature i have lots of applications, configs, customizations in Pocket Breeze, iLauncher etc.. i really wouldn't want to go over everything again (if i could remember them afterwards anyhow!).
So how do you all handle new ROM versions? Do you do a full restore from a previous ROM backup or not?
Thanks, Jan

personally i'd do it again from scratch...
That way you know that any 'bugs' are from the new update, and not strange things that you've carried accross in your hybrid system.

I know, but that's a pain. I was wondering if there was a way to backup all os-independant data, so only third party settings, third party registry settings, etc.. Then do a ROM update, and then restore all 3d party config settings and registry entries again. That way we wouldn't touch ROM dependant changes in the registry and filesystem which fixed bugs for example.
(i know for example ilauncher can export it's config)

that's why there's this advice "do not patch when your system is running fine".
however in the case of buggy X50v WM5 A01, it might worth the try

SpriteBackup eventually will support also on WM5.0 restores after ROM updates.
The way they do it on previous versions of their software is that you do a full backup of your system, hard-reset it, create an image of the just hard-reset system, upgrade the ROM and then restore the difference between the full backup and the image of the previous ROM. It works, but not always and even that may suffer from changes that the manufacturer have made from one ROM version to another.
At the moment, neither Spb's or Sprite's backup software for WM 5.0 support such restore.
Still, the best advice is to reinstall everything from scratch after a ROM update and I know how a pain that can be (I have more than 40 apps installed on my devices) , but I do that even so.
BTW, I'm afraid I suffer from the same disease as you do.
