Biggest problem with Axim X51v...

...is that I can't easily get always available email and web access outside of my home network. I can access wifi through my Linksys but duh, I have a computer at home already. I bought the Axim for on the road access which is 50% of the time.

I have a T-mobile account that I can use at Starbucks, but other than that, what is the best way to accomplish this? Modem through my Verizon phone? Broadband Verizon wireless? Sell it and get a Smartphone?

It's a bit frustrating as I would like to be able to check email wherever I am. I'm in the LA/San Diego area all the time so options should abound.

Any help for a newbie on this would be greatly appeciated.

Thanks in advance, love this site.:)

selling the X51V and buying a smartphone/PE device (such as jam, Kjam ect.) could be a good idea. however, if web access is so important for you, you can always set a connection using your cellphone as a modem, and linking it to the PPC via BT/IR. you should talk to your SP

I've thought about that. I heard it's a little slow though. I just need email access since I recieve a lot of email each day.

Thanks for the idea, I'll talk with Verizon.

Will Verizon let Axims call Home?

Mr.Buggs & others: I don't own an Axim YET. I have been on a search for months to do the same thing Mr. Buggs has suggested: Use a Verizon phone with a handheld. Dell's techies couldn't give me an answer and sent me here. I actually found posts that suggested this was possible. Palm products need GSM which Verizon phones are not. I would rather not go the Treo route. Verizon was also useless when asked this.

Is this possible yet? If so, how?

I am a Realtor in Bucks County, Pa now on Palm Vx, Dell Latitude, Motorola flip phone and need more access in the field--literally. Also need to update PDA and phone service.

And what would GSM be, if I may be so ignorant?

GSM is just another cell phone standard.

Going through Verizon -should- be possible, now that they offer wireless internet through certain phones. Of course they will charge you for it ($59.99) a month, and they only support teathered access.

Once Verizon stops being so anal retentive about their products and opens up the bluetooth capabilites of their phones, this should be easy.

I can currently use bluetooth on my verizon phone to get online with my axim. It uses my anytime minutes and I pay no monthly fee. The speed is 40-60K which is slower than the several hundred kbps you'll get with EVDO (which was mentioned above, at $59.99/mo).

Well, that sounds a little slow but that's what I was afraid of. It's worth a try however. I'm a newbie at this thing, can you give a quick rundown on how you set that up?

Greatly appreciate the help.

Here is what you need to do:

FIRST: Pair your phone with the PDA.

THEN:
1) Start > Settings > Connections
2) Click Connections icon
3) Add a new modem connection
4) Type verizon-internet ( or whatever you want )
5) Select modem: Bluetooh
6) Pick your phone from the list
7) Enter number #777
8) Username : xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com ( where xxx is your phone number )
9) Password: vzw
10 ) leave domain empty..

Click finish and viola. You will have a new connection listed under under #2 ( look above ). Tap, hold and choose connect.

GSM = Global System for Mobile Communications
I have tested the data rates for verizon some years ago before they really new what was going on.(as if they do now) They used to throttle back the speeds to allow for more users. They all do this now. The specs for throughput is well beyond what they are providing to the consumer.

Well, that's the clearest instructions I've ever received regarding my Axim! Got all the way to connecting but I received the promt that my username or password is incorrect. Double checked everything:

I actually typed #777 per your instructions

Username is my phone + vzw3g.com, no "1" before the number

pasword is vzw.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for helping.

Mine is the 8100 and it's bluetooth capable. I've almost got it set up but I think either the password or username is in corrrect.

The directions are correct, I've been using this for years. The time used comes out
of your plan minutes.

Your cell plan must have a line that reads National Access MOU or something like that. If you have a camera phone or a phone that uses the Get It Now apps you probably have it. Basically that is Verizon's high speed network (1X) which is what those two use. I can get about 130 kb/sec (ISDN) speeds using it.

I've heard people say that Verizon doesn't support this but as long as you don't abbuse it they seem to look the other way. Just be careful how much you use it to avoid unexpected charges.

If your plan does not have that line, you may try calling them and ask to have it added. Don't say anything about using a laptop though as they will want to sell you a data plan.

-todd

Edit - I am using my LG VX 7000 with my laptop via a USB cable right now to type this. Just did a speedtest and my d/l speed is 125 kbps u/l is 75 kbps.
