help- basics of wifi?

like i said in a recent post, i am seriously about to go order a x51v.

i am over 40 years of age, so please excuse my cluelessness-
how does wifi work?

do i have to pay extra for some subscription or service? can i have the x51v use my home dsl connection, for free? does this happen by magic through the air?

would i have to put some kind of wifi card in my home comp to enable that? my home comp is very good: new asus mb, amd x2 chip, etc., and my internet connection is reliable and fast).

In order for a x51 to be able to access the internet using wifi, you'd need to have a wifi access point. Some DSL providers now include one on their modems (I know that Qwest and Verizon both have this available in Portland, Oregon). If your DSL modem has an antenna on it, you just need to enable the wifi radio. If it doesn't have one, you'll need to buy a wifi router. Connect your DSL modem to the wan port of the router and then your PC to one of the lan ports. Then follow the router instructions for enabling and securing the wireless portion. I have a Belkin router that I got at WalMart for around $40 and it works great with both my computers and my Axim.

You will not be able to walk down the sidewalk or drive down the road and use the internet. wifi is internet through the air that travels only about 200 feet. You can get wifi in places called hotspots. Some stores, and restaraunts, airports, etc. Still other places you will have to pay.

There are a couple of different ways to connect wifi at home. Either through your computer - but your computer will have to be on. Or by installaing a WAP. Wireless Access Point.
