Fastest Cellular Modem/Cingular

I currently own a Motorola V551 with Cingular service and I think it's almost shot. I connect to it via BT with my axim and surf and check mail. Since I'm about to have to get a new phone I would like to get one that will allow me to do this as fast as possible.

I know there is GPRS and Edge and then there are different classes of modems as well and I don't really know what to look for or even how the V551 that I have now compares to the others. The RAZOR seems popular...what about that one?

Thank you,
Shannon

Check with cingular to find out which technology they have and where.
Where will probably rule in the short term. I know their gprs coverage has significantly increased and just about everywhere I get coverage the gprs symbol pops up -- even in west texas.

Than may narrow your phone choices and then you can compare. Also check out http://www.howardforums.com/ I'm sure there a reviews and real world experience over there. Good Luck.

I use the same phone right now with my x50v to surf the net all the time...its pretty slow but useful....any other CINGULAR cell phone will be the same right now.
I'm waiting to upgrade my phone for a bit....right now EDGE or GPRS only runs at 70-135 Kb/sec...they already have a new network in place called HSDPA or 3G and this supports 400-700 Kb/sec...that is a huge improvement...but right now they only have PC cards for laptops, the new phones that support the latest network speeds come out later....I imagine a few months...

The V551 is a class 6 EDGE modem, and OK modem but there are faster. Do a search on "insert interested phone's name here + modem class + gprs or edge" on google and you will find what you need.

The RAZR is about as slow as you could get. It's GPRS class 10, which has a maxumum practical speed of around 5 KB/second. It sells on style, not on the specs. Your current v551 is EDGE class 4, with speeds up to 15 KB/s.

The fastest available speed is EDGE class 10, which permits up to 22 KB/s depending on signal and network conditions. This class of EDGE is found in the Motorola v360, Palm Treo 650, and others. You might check PhoneScoop.com's specs lists and phone finder to narrow down your candidates. The Moto v360 would be the closest to your existing phone in terms of style and interface, as well as having significantly increased battery life. You might want to look at that one particularly.

If I may ask, what's wrong with your v551?

Thanks so much for the responses. It's a little clearer now. It looks like the higher the class the faster the modem? and EDGE is faster than GPRS?

As far as my 551 goes...I think it's just been dropped on too many time. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't! No real rhyme or reason to it.

Thanks,
Shannon
