difference between cf/sd and microdrive?

hi everyone,

what's the difference between them? are microdrives for digital cameras also compatible with the x51v?

why are some 4gig or 6gig microdrives less expensive than some 2gig cf of sd?

Really it depends on the microdrive. OEM versions (seagates with firmware) are not, but the vast majority are compatible.

The biggest difference between CF/SD cards and microdrives is the hardware. Microdrives are like little miniature harddrives (they have a platter), CF/SD cards are solid state (no moving parts).

I'm not sure Microdrives have larger capacity. Maybe for the money, but you can get an 8GB or 12GB CF card.
I think the 12GB CF card I saw had a price tag somewhere near $10,000.
An 8GB CF is somewhere near $380.

Edit:
Found the 12GB card. It is showing a price of $7,300

Both Seagate and Hitachi CF microdrives work on my X50v. The Seagate 8GB CF I got from Amazon for $150 works awesome. The Hitachi 4GB microdrive works great but hisses too much in my opinion and drains the battery quicker on my Axim.

Aren't most microdrive CF Type II, which is really the difference between CF and and Microdrive. The microdrives is a little bit wider right?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Microdrives are THICKER, not wider.

The disadvantages of a microdrive are two-fold:
1) Moving parts are susceptible to jarring - which will damage it
2) The mechanism consumes more energy than a regular flashcard
