AC adator has a nominal value of 5V and the battery has a nominal value of 3.6V!
How come you have 12V from Axims?
This thread has gone a bit off-topic. The 12v mention was about PCs in general, not Axims.

This thread is a really good example of what happens when uninformed people get together and have a battle of egos. All it does is confuse people with erroneous information.
It's generated internally for internal Flash writing (external Flash memory cards have their own power supplies). There's also an inverter that outputs several hundred volts for the backlight lamp, BTW.
As for the whole problem, it's yet another reason to go with open source Linux.

What, are they all named Ravi?
Seriously, typical flash ROM has the habit of wearing out after 10000 read/write cycles. I believe one difference between the X50 and the X51 series is that they used faster, hardier ROM so it could withstand being the primary partition of the OS. I don't know why they retrofitted the X50 line with WM5, especially considering this issue.

More like 100,000 to a million for modern chips. The 10,000 figure is mostly for very old chips.
If I were to design an embedded system OS, I would save modified data to the RAM and write it to Flash when the file editing is finished or when a certain time passes (or when the sync command is called either manually or by a program).

I've flashed my first CDRW drive 6 years ago trying to upgrade it's ROM. Made it a paper weight. My DVD-ROM drive same problem 3 years later. Also a MP3 player too. My heart skipped a few beats while I was upgrading the BIOS on my PC, AXIM and also on my DVD recorder that's hooked up to my TV. And I just got my brand new Sony DVD +- R dual layer dvd recorder and I'm about to upgrade that too that too :)
Point is 3 out 7 times I completely bricked the devices upgrading it's Firmware via SOFTWARE.
