X51 really slow powering up

G'day all,

First, a big thanks to you guys as you've saved me a whole lot of grief with your tips... but I'm still having an issue that I was hoping someone can shed some light on.

When I power on my Axim and there is a reminder pending from the Calendar, it can take up to 3-4 minutes before I can get the screen to respond well enough to enter my password. By "respond", I mean it's really, really slow... taking 4-5 sedonds to respond to keyboard or handwriting entries.

If there is no reminder pending, it can still take about a minute before I can get it to accept my password. Please tell me it's not just me... :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated... cheers!

I've had slower response, and decided to do a fresh rebuild.

Here's my first report. New v51v (with A06 from the factory).

Fresh hard reset and time to boot: 39 seconds.

Will see if that changes as I load software.

ksong12, not right as in still too long?

Another update, after reloading a subset of my earlier set of apps, the start up time is still about the same; however, I was able to get rid of the annoying slow response time (anywhere from 5 to 25 second delays to open up or switch to programs).

I guess since it was so bad previously, I am pleased with the new improved response (relative to the bad).

What are other people seeing for the soft boots?

WM5's use of flashROM instead of the much quicker RAM is part of the problem. A lot also depends on your today page. With everything off, I boot @ ~40 sec (X51v A06). Basic things like owner info, messaging, etc. add another 10 sec or so. Add Pocket Weather and Pocket Breeze it's a whopping 76 sec! Like with desktop windows, every new version of WinCE/PPC/PocketPC/WMxxxx takes longer to boot than the previous version. VGA seems to make a big difference too, the big jump in boot time occurred with my VGA equipped Toshiba E805. It takes a significant time to restart too and with all the problems of the early release of PocketPC2003SE, I used to reset a lot! Even with all those complaining about WM5 instabilities around here, I don't find the need to soft reset very often, so the slow boot isn't much of an issue for me. I had to reset for the first time in 3 weeks this morning to get the beta 2 of Opera to install properly. Add to that the 4 resets I just did to get the reboot times reported here ;)

Bagelsnbrew, thanks for the confirmation. It looks like the base boot time is similar.

Random Question: does the size of the ROM/SDRAM impact the boot time.

As a reference, my system has 256MB ROM,64MB SDRAM.

Same problem I had. I would make sure you are using A06 ROM update from dell.com and find thread for Active Sync "trick" to keep it from constantly starting and trying to sync. Also, I stopped using Odyssey client. Otherwise all the same software is back on and it is instant on now. Your exact problem made me want to smash it against the pavement (or get a refund) but I am much more satisfied with it after the above changes. HTH.

When you say "boot" do you mean wake up from the sleep or a soft reset?

Is the icon for Odyssey showing in the tray? it looks like a sailing ship. if so that is the problem. open the program and then exit from it. your times sound like my x50v wm5 for a while before i discovered this.

Thanks for the responses... I've got a few things to try now.

I didn't mean to say "boot" as in software reset. This is happening when I turn it on.

I'm going to try A06 (I'm on A04) and see where I get to. I'll keep you posted.
