alright, obviously, i've posted here because i want the phone to work with my x51v/wm5 and bluetooth (fat chance?).
never owned a cell phone before, so i really don't know which features i will and will not utilize other than the ability to connect to the internet via the phone (not dialing in, but rather using its internet services provided by the cell phone company). i also know that i will never use a bluetooth headset... i have no desire what-so-ever to pay $60 to remove a cord that's going to be going to my pocket anyway.
my 3 choices are:
Nokia 6255i
Motorola v710
Motorola RAZR (V3c)
i really like the nokia because it has an mmc slot, but i can't honestly say that i would ever use that... i'd just think it's cool that it's there lol (why use the phone's when you have a pda?). i really like the razer because of its slim form factor. i am a land surveyor, and my only storage is my pockets and belt. anything that can take up less room in either of the 2 will be a plus for me (but i'm inventive.. i can usually find a way to carry almost anything).
so, what would you suggest? i would go ahead and just go straight for the razer, but i heard that it doesn't have full bluetooth support or something. is this something i should worry about? on the other hand though, i like the nokia phone quite a bit, arguably even more than the razer lol. they both seem to be great phones. the v710 doesn't interest me that much, but it's an option if people think it would serve me well.
well, sorry for such a complicated question :(. just tell me the advantages/disadvantages to the phones if you could
I'm currently using the V3c, and my last phone was the V710. Both are good performers as far as RF is concerned. The V3c has a better camera, more advanced voice command system, EV-DO, a mostly aluminum housing, and the thin form factor. The two things I miss on it that the V710 had is the transflash memory slot and analog (although I rarely go into areas where there is only analog coverage).
I'm not sure where you're from or which service provider you are with. Some of the CDMA carriers cripple certain Bluetooth profiles so that you can only use it with headsets. In Canada, Telus has an uncrippled V3c with the OBEX profile intact while Bell has disabled OBEX. In the States, I know that Verizon (other than on the initial release) has similarly crippled the Bluetooth functions on their V3c. I've read that Alltel doesn't limit their Bluetooth profiles, but I'm not 100% sure. The V710 on Telus and Verizon both have crippled Bluetooth.

I have heard that the super-slim Motorolas have some problems with battery life, and Motorolas in general have some problems with call quality. My V551's speaker doesn't work very well because it's too quiet whenever there is any ambient noise. I can, however, pair it and use it to surf the web. Cingular. X50 WM2003SE.
Why does Verizon castrate their phones?
I have a V710. I personally love it. It took a little bit of work on my part, but since we found out how to tether it, the results have been positive. Also, if your provider will be Verizon, the V710 is the way to go. Since the RAZR has EV-DO unless you want to go through the process of disabling it I wouldn't tether to the internet. It violates Verizon's TOS to use EV-DO when tethered to the internet. Last I checked, 1xRTT wasn't. Plus the RAZR probably has the infamous RED UI on it meaning no DUN. I don't think the V710 can even have that stupid UI.
I'm guessing you are going to use alltel as your provider though. Like I said, I would stick with the V710. The RAZR doesn't have as good a battery, and I think the thing about EV-DO is true for alltel as well. I haven't had any experience with the Nokia, I can't seem to locate a data sheet for it telling what services it supports over BT.

So they can force users to pay to download ringtones and transfer files through Verizon's services.
no one can force you...... there is always ways around stuff like that.... check out the post below that i posted to another thread earlier..... i hate retyping stuff ...

I have an E815 and a Axim X30 and i use it all of the time with verizon to dialup to the internet and surf and check email via bluetooth. I also do that with my laptop via bluetooth as well.
Verzion does diable the dialup networking on some if not all of their phones to force you to pay 59.99 for the dialup or express service what ever it is called again. but you need to check out howardforms.com for some cool hacks for cellphones.
I found out to enable the dialup networking on my E815 you have to type #dialup on the keypad and it will enable the Dialup networking (which verizon disabled)..... i think it also works for the v710...... not sure about the Razr though.
also you can get free dialup service with verizon using the following which i found on http://www.howardforums.com/
The cool part is if you are cool enough to live in a city with vcast then you get the high speed for free as well, since using the below settings will put your phone in packet data mode and not the standard 14.4 dialup. i have used the high speed vcast dialup in Knoxville,TN but i live in Johnson City, TN which the verizon guys told me it would be close to the end of the year before we had vcast here. Yea..... High Speed :-) But if you use the settings below all you have to pay for is your regual plan minutes and no internet charges. remember to use the free nights and weekends!!! ;-)
below is a copied reply that i posted to another thread....

yeah the number you have to dail is #777
and your username will be yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com
and the password will be vzw
also just a hint verizon disables the dial up networking on alot of their phones so that you have to pay to get the dialup service. but if you check out howardforms.com they have all kinds of cool hacks for cell phones.
i have the Motorola E815 and to enable it you have to type ##dialup on the keypad to enable it... i think it also works with the v710....not sure about the Razr
I also own a V710, and I also love it. The only knock would be the camera. If this is important to you, then this is not the phone for you. As mentioned earlier, the Motorolas are known for their excellent RF. Mine gets reception in many places my old LG did not.
The V710 is DUN enabled out of the box -- no ##dialup necessary.
If I was in the market now, I'd probably consider an E815, though. It is newer, and the keypad and camera are supposed to be better. There's some advice somewhere on this site and Howard Forums as well as to how to bump it down to 1xRTT if you aren't comfortable with the EV-DO. The 1x isn't too bad at around 80-100 kbs. You won't be using it for streaming, but browsing and e-mail are fine.
I agree with you, Kamel, that it is a good idea to solicit users' opinions here, but as StopTheBus says you really should also spend some time at Howard Forums, as intimidating as it might be. There is a wealth of good information there, even with Pocket PCs and tethering.
Now, after having said that, I fail to see how a link to the front page of HoFo proves that "Motorola quality is not up to par, to put it mildly." Based on my experience, you might want to provide just a little more information to support that assertion.
Is there a way to get my V710 to talk with my Axim? I want to use it for quick dial-up sessions to check email. I use Qwest as my carrier (crappy company, but I get 2000 anytime mins including LD for $50/mo).

Why does Verizon castrate their phones?
You can use a program to tweak the speaker spettings - I upped the volume on mine, and also changed the front LCD display and added back the keypad lock (they nerfed that for some stupid reason).
Howardforums and VxxxStuff are two good places for help with this.

If you have verizon, don't go with the RAZR. Its got the infamous RED UI, so does the E815 i think.
