I have been using my Axim x51v for a little over a month, and have loved it... until recently.
A crack has developed on the screen over the last few days. (I haven't dropped or abused my Ax in any way, in fact I have babied it!) A very unpleasant call to Dell later, and I find out that my options are the following:
- pay $339 for a replacement screen because my unit is out of warranty... (How could that possibly be? I bought it a little over a month ago)
or
- enjoy my lovely new cracked paperweight.
Needless to say, I am VERY disappointed. I really feel screwed over by Dell, as I swear to you that I did NOTHING to cause the crack on the screen. I refuse to pony up another $340 to Dell for something that I feel is a defect, and is in no way my doing. I basically feel like they accused me of dropping/breaking this thing and trying to lie about it. I am normally happy with Dell products, but I will definitely think twice before buying Dell again.
Where did you buy it from? If you bought it from eBay, the seller may have had it for a while before selling it. If you bought it from Dell the minimum warranty shouldn't be less than 90 days.... but I thought 1 year was standard.

I bought it direct from Dell, and I thought it would for sure be covered under warranty. Apparently not though .
Dell had changed some of their warranty periods from 1 year to 90 days or less on some products - pays to watch that closely when purchasing from them now. They had started selling 1-year warranties as extra $$.

As far as the crack, as it developed over time this way, you're out of luck. Too much opportunity for other issues than to attribute it to only manufacturing defect.

A new digitzer glasstop is only about $50 if that's what cracked. If it's the LCD screen itself, those are usually sold with a new glasstop already attached and are in the $200 range. Plus instructions for the x51v aren't out yet making it a bit of a gamble.
If Dell won't cover you, your best alternative is to get a replacement screen and fix it yourself.
If it's just the glass that's cracked, I believe a replacement part is around 100-150. Do a search you should find the info easily. I recall a forum member did the replacement himself on the x50.
www.gethitech.com has the glass top for 49.99 and the LCD + glasstop for 189.99. They usually have instructions for the work too, but not for the X51v yet.

Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant.
I feel your pain.
My X50v had an alignment problem and Dell gave me the run around.
The problem was that it stuck at the alignment screen.
I ordered and replaced the digitizer/glass top and now it's ten thousand times better than when I first opened the Dell box. Alignment is 1 shot and 1 shot only.

Something not right here... If you've only had your Ax for 1-2 months then it is DEFINITELY still under warranty. Are you sure the Dell bod didn't say that the damage wasn't COVERED by warranty, (as he believed that a crack in the screen can only be caused by mis-use?)
Can you tell us where the crack is? If it's been caused by some sort of manufacturing fault then I would expect it to be at the edge if the screen, disappearing under the casing; (I fail to see how a crack could 'develop' in the middle of the screen except by some kind of shock to the unit). Do you have kids? (My wife's PDA 'developed' a scratch on the screen which we later found was down to one of my precious little ones attacking the thing with a ball point pen...)
Finally, I'd certainly concur with other comments that you should try calling Dell Support again, but if there's a crack on your screen that is not related to some kind of manufacturing fault at the edge where it is attached to the LCD and comes into contact with the casing then I wouldn't hold out much hope... On another track - maybe your house contents insurance would cover it? I've advised several people in this regard who have had dropped laptops or lightening strike damaged PCs replaced new for old ;o)
Pick up the phone or grab another HS representative online. As others said, you'll eventually find one that will help you.
