Does anyone know if there are instructions available for replacing the boot screens for the Axim x51v?
I cannot locate anything and I would like to include that with any theme I create. I am working on one for the University at which I teach and another for my personal theme.
I heard something about this months ago, but the reason I did nothing is because of the risk involved. I'm not about to risk my pocket pc for a custom startup screen.

Thanks and Cheers.

The boot screens are set in the ROM build, and cannot be changed through any normal procedure. You would have to extract the ROM, modify it, then restore it to the Axim. This is a VERY risky task with a high probability of putting your Axim in an un-bootable state.
I would focus on creating some customized Today themes. You have a lot more freedom there with no risk, and its what you see 99% of the time.

Thas really is too bad. I am sure that there is someone out there that can figure that one out. As much as I do soft reset my Axim, I sure would like to look at something new other than that big blue Dell bubble. It is just getting old.

It sounds like we have gotten spoiled by the things our modding community has been able to do. A question about changing the boot screen should be answered with an immediate "No", since it cannot be done through any practical means. But since we are talking about electronics it isn't technically impossible, so we mention a way it 'could' be done. Someone certainly could figure it out, but it will involve modifying Dell's ROM image; this is outside of the intention of the device and will void the warranty.

I changed my windows xp boot screen and a lot of other things to that of windows vista via the windows vista transformation pack. my dell is 7yrs old and that screen is just dell in blue letters in a black background. as for ppc just deal w/it ur only on there for a few seconds.
there's been many times people have suggested doing this or that, and people have said blah blah that's risky, etc.. but when it comes down to it, many times it does end up happening and it does end up commonplace among ppc users.
i think a proper response would be along the lines of "no, it's not currently possible. doing this would be very risky because it requires you to edit some very deep system files, so the chances of it becoming a reality are not looking good either."
maybe i'm just being overzaelous lol. just stating my opinion *shrugs*
a boot screen modification would be cool, but tbh even if it wasn't risky and wasn't hard to do, i probably wouldn't do it out of sheer laziness.

I'm glad you ended your post with "just stating my opinion", because what you are saying is wrong. Modifying the boot screen will never become commonplace because it involves changing the ROM image. This is way more complex than making a reg hack or changing some system files -- and if it isn't done right you could end up with a broken Axim that can't be fixed by a hard-reset.

Well well -- do I get brownie points for starting this discussion? ha ha. The ROM image answer is enough for me to say --- naw I'll wait and see if that changes in the future. I can see OEM updates to the ROM that would allow for an external call to an image file or directory -- I'll wait untill then.
Regarding the mod of the Today Screen - that I am already doing and I wanted to produce boot screens that are like the today themes.
No problems here -- I learned to be patient in graduate school
Cheers again - now where dd I leave my stylus?
I swear that a couple of months ago, someone posted a tutorial on this forum about how changing the boot image can be done... I remember being interested in it, but not trying it due to the risk involved.
