I have an x51v and love it. It works great. No problems whatsoever.
I've been shopping around for an iPod.
I keep asking myself, "Why get an iPod when you have an Axim?"
So, now I ask you? Can I make my x51v do iPod stuff?
Another question... Does 1GB on an Axim hold the same number of songs that 1GB does on an iPod?
Thanks for the help.

Yes, 1gb on axim is the same as 1gb on ipod. Its pretty much all flash memory. You lose a little when its formated, but so do you on the ipod. Put your music on the axim and put x50 mix on there. Then compare the audio quality to that of an ipod. The axims is better.
Also you can play games on an axim while listening to music, try that on an ipod. You can get sd cards up to 4gb and cf cards up to 8gb microdrives.

Yes you can make your Axim do EVERYTHING an iPOD can do and then some more. However it may not be as comfortable to do it as there aren't really any good optimized interfaces but you can live with it. If you have no problems with the audio quality of your Axim then it will make a great portable media player.
However I reccommend one of the gigantic Mugen batteries and yes 1GB holds the same number of songs, however it all depends on how you encode them.

This picture taken from my Axim X51v (12GB on board) says it all!

Solsie knows how to end a debate! That is an incredible picture. I'd like to add a note to this discussion. I bought my ipod about 4 or 5 years ago and still use it all the time. It's a 20gig 2nd generation.
If my Ax could hold my entire music collection and the battery could last several hours and it had the turn wheel interface that makes it easy to find songs, then I would dump the ipod. But if I just wanted a 1gig ipod I would NOT spend $250 on it, I'd just get an sd card for $40 or $50 or whatever they cost. Or better yet, get a CF and SD card, or a large microdrive. All of those are cheaper than the ipod.
You know what, if I didn't have an ipod today, I might still get one over just using the Ax b/c I store movies on my flash memory. I have 5gigs of flash memory, that's enough for 4-5 movies, nav maps, and software. Not enough for mp3s in my opinion.
I hope I've given you a different point of view and something to think about. Good luck on your decision.
I'd say the axim is better. Better audio quality, video quality, best of all alot cheaper. The only way i'd get an ipod is if I got the 20GB-60GB version to store my whole collection.
The axim can do much more than an iPod, but not always better. For playing music, the iPod is a better choice. It has a very convinient and easy to use interface, and much better battery life than the axim. For everything else, the axim is a better choice.
There is one big benifit to having an axim for music. You can encode your .mp3s to .ogg (OGG VORBIS) format and play them on your axim. 1 GB of mp3s will convert to about 512MB of oggs (roughly the same quality). I always used .ogg for music on my axim, you can fit twice as much!
First of all I'd like to see some solid fact to backup the statement that the Axim sound is superior to the iPod. Until someone can provide that I'd suggest taking any such comments with a grain of salt. As they say "Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home."
If your music demands are fairly simple then listening to music on your PDA is awesome. One device and it does a ton of stuff.
But - I use a 30GB iPod and carry around ~2,300 songs with me. Admittedly not everyone does that, but if your demands are closer to 1,000 songs than they are to 100 songs then I'd consider an iPod.
The iPod of also has the simple click wheel interface but more powerful tools like the Smart Playlists etc.
So I don't think there is a definitive answer as to which one is better, IMHO the main thing is how much music you want to carry around.

I love my Axim and my also love my 60 gig video iPod. The problem with using the Axim as a music player vs the iPod is that it's bigger, the battery doesn't last as long, and storage capacity is limited. The Axim has the obvious advantage in that it can do far more as a PDA than the iPod can. I guess it depends on what is important to you.
i can run my axim playing music for 6 hours straight using the factory fresh 1100mAh battery and GSPlayer...
the trick is to power down the processor and turn off the screen.
I suppose you'd get about 12 hours with 2200 and even more with a bigger one :)
Apologies if this is going off track a little ........
Does anyone know of a program (or skin) that emulates the touch-wheel interface of the Ipod? I know that Solsie posted a screenshot of what appears to be an ipod skin taken off his Axim, but does it also emulate the wheel function? Given that the Axim has a touch screen, it has to be possible.....
