I thought it might be useful for me to share my solution to this problem. My X51v started displaying these symptoms and I couldn't find a complete solution anywhere on the web.
The symptoms are that Activesync starts and begins by displaying "looking for changes". This can last for several tens of minutes and nothing happens. Sometimes the PDA would sync, but increasingly often it would fail; timing out.
I tried a number of the suggestions I found on the web, but there were really just generic "cold reset" type solutions, which didn't really address the problem in my case.
After much testing, I think that I have finally found a solution. So, as I suspect that I'm not the only one suffering this problem, I thought I'd share it here. Hopefully this will be helpful to others.
The underlying problem I uncovered was with the virtual NIC that's created on the PC. Within the properties for this NIC, "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing..." had become active. I found that by unticking these and leaving only "TCP/IP" that the problem disappeared. That is, the sync process returned to normal.
If you have this problem with Activesync, I would heartily recommend checking these setttings.

Thanks. Would like to check the settings. Can you please be more specific in directing me to them?
PS Have googled to find NIC means network interface card. I presume this doesn't apply in my case, as I'm not on a network?

Hi.. I think what the author meant was a virtual NIC card created under your PC 'Network Connections' section.. you would need to go to the properties and uncheck the items as mentioned. This virtual NIC is the one that manages connection between your PC and the axim. This would release some of the resources thus speeding up the entire process.
It should apply as it's the "virtual" card which Activesync 4.X creates to use for syncing.
To find it (in xp), go into Control Panel|Network Connections. In here, you should see a network connection for the PDA. This will probably be called "Network Connection number"
Look at its properties and check whether "Client for ..." and "File and Print.." are ticked. If they are, untick them and apply the change.
Thanks for clarification. I unchecked the two options other than TCP/IP but, to be honest, I don't see great improvement; that having been said, I never had extremely long waiting times, maybe a minute or two, so perhaps I was being greedy trying to improve on that!
